First you pull your wheel off and set it aside, then take off your wheel bearing by removing the three twelve point bolts on the back side of the hub. Then as you will be able to see you can just pull the axle shaft out. Just be very careful of the seals inside. Once you have the shaft out you have to get the c-clips off of the inside of the pivoting part. ( there are four all together) and then you need to beat the caps out of the holes there pressed into from the inside beat them outward. Once you get two out it gets easyer lol. After all the caps are out and there are needle bearings everywhere lol with the new u joint take off two opposing caps( be careful of the needle bearings inside) and place one of the cap less ends into the hole on either part of the shaft you pick up first once in place the cap with the needle bearings in from the outside over the male end of the joint in the shaft and carefully tap it down into the hole on the shaft, then repeat to get the other half connected. Once all four caps are on the joint and seated so there almost flush with the hole there in, make sure the joint moves freely if not take your hammer and firm but carefully smack about a inch down from where the cap is pressed in( sorry this is kinda hard to describe lol) and it will loosen it up. Then your done with that shaft.

BTW you can only take out the pass. Side if you have the disconnect axle if you don't have the disconnect then I'm pretty sure there held in by c-clips, but you can still replace the u joint it just a bit harder

Sorry this is way long lol just trying to help best I can

shouldnt have to worry about c clips, i just did my 01 xj not to long ago and no c clips for me.

there is a trick to getting the wheel bearing out without beating it with a hammer and chisel

when you are taking the bolts out of the back of the bearing/hub leave them in partially and get a 3 inch extension and put it on one of the bolts and turn wheel opposite way pushing the extension against the bolt, i might be a little hard but crank it a little bit harder if it doesnt just push out, you should hear a pop and the bearing wheel be loose, i swear i have seen a youtube video of it but i cannot seem to find it, maybe someone else that knows what im talking about can explain it a little better or know of where this video is

good luck

X2 on leaving the three bolts a couple threads in, I just turned the wheel and taped them with the socket I took them out with.

Can I replace U

The truth is that with a few sockets you probably already have in the toolbox, a hammer, and a basic bench vise, you can easily knock out worn U-joints and wrap up the repair as an afternoon project.

A bad u-joint can cause a clunking sound or jerkiness while driving, particularly when letting off of and pressing the accelerator.
