Apple tv plus ted lasso season 2

Ted Lassospoilers follow.

Ted Lasso, and its kind-hearted take on the world, has captured the hearts of everyone who's watched the series, whether you like football or not. Sweeping the awards board (quite rightly), it's clear the cast behind the show are as tight-knit as their fictional football team.

In September 2022, Ted Lasso won the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series again for the second year in a row, making it only the eighth in 74 years to win for both the first two seasons. The show took four wins home in total, including Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series (Jason Sudeikis), Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series (Brett Goldstein), and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series (MJ Delaney).

Now fans are waiting patiently for the American soccer coach and the lads of AFC Richmond to return for more shenanigans on our screens.

But this time round they have a new foe in their midst in the shape of a former friend – with coach Nate defecting to West Ham out of spite.

So what can we expect from Ted Lasso season three? Here's everything we know so far.

Currently, as of September 2022, there is no confirmed date for the return of Ted Lasso.

It's likely a while off, unfortunately, seeing as filming only really started in March – a month later than the team's initially-planned Valentine's Day (Feb 14) commencement date.

Season three was confirmed back in October 2020, and unless there's been a change of heart, it seems this will also be the final season of the show. The writing team have made it clear that three seasons are what they had in mind for their story.

Leading man Jason Sudeikis told Entertainment Weekly: "The story that's being told – that three-season arc – is one that I see, know, and understood.

"I'm glad that they are willing to pay for those three seasons. As far as what happens after that, who knows? I don't know."

Writer and Coach Beard actor Brendan Hunt agreed, adding: "I think we've always meant it to be three seasons. I think it would be pretty cool if, in the face of how much everyone likes this show, that we stick to our guns and really just do three seasons."

The show's co-creator Bill Lawrence also insisted the series was always meant to consist of three parts. "Ted Lasso is a three-season show. After the third season, I will desperately try to get Mr Sudeikis to do a… [fourth season]," he told Comicbook.com.

"The only way I think a fourth season of Ted Lasso exists would be if TL went and coached a soccer team that played about a block from Jason's house in real life, you know what I mean?"

Given filming has started, we would roughly guess that the show will return towards the end of 2022.

Ted Lasso season 3: Who's going to be in the cast?

It's almost a guarantee at this point that all the essential players will be back for Ted Lasso season three... even if they are in a different position to when we first met them.

Jason Sudeikis will continue on as the impossibly nice Ted Lasso, with Brendan Hunt his second-in-command as Coach Beard.

Completing their 'Diamond Dogs' crew are Brett Goldstein as Roy Kent, and Jeremy Swift as Higgins.

However, they've lost Nate "the great" (Nick Mohammed), who is now joining forces with Anthony Head's Rupert over at West Ham.

Hannah Waddingham has confirmed her return as team owner Rebecca Welton, with Juno Temple also returning as her best mate and PR extraordinaire Keeley Jones.

Completing the gang at AFC Richmond are:

• Phil Dunster (Jamie Tartt)
• Toheeb Jimoh (Sam Obisanya)
• Cristo Fernández (Dani Rojas)
• Kola Bokinni (Isaac)
• Billy Harris (Colin)

Plus there's always scope for new additions, starting with For All Mankind's Jodi Balfour, who has joined the season three cast as Jack, "a charming venture capitalist".

Sarah Niles, who joined the cast for season two as sports psychologist Dr Sharon Fieldstone has not been confirmed for a return, but is hopefully back too. It seems Ted needs her friendship now more than ever, and the second season suggested she could use someone to lean on, too.

Ted Lasso season 3 plot: What will Ted Lasso season 3 be about?

Back in September 2022, Variety asked Sudeikis if season three might be the final outing for Ted Lasso, to which he replied: "I don't know, it's up to more factors than myself.

"The response to the show has been overwhelming," Jason continued. "We have a tremendous group of writers. We have a tremendous group of actors. We have a tremendous group of people in production and post-production. All of those things are thrown into the jambalaya of possibility. So I couldn't say yes or no."

Well, if season two of Ted Lasso is anything to go by (and if we're going on the assumption this is the final season), it seems there's a lot they need to get through then.

Their first goal: will AFC Richmond be able to defeat West Ham and win the Premier League? Second: will they be able to win back Nate from the dark side?

At the end of season two, a furious Nate felt underappreciated, and after a row with Ted defected to West Ham, the club is now owned by Rebecca's d-bag ex-husband Rupert.

"I'm effectively the villain in it now, which is a funny place to find myself. I gasped when I was first told about it," Nick Mohammed told the BBC.

Nate even went as far as to tear down Ted's iconic 'Believe' banner, which was as shocking to Mohammed as it was to us.

"I was literally like, 'No, you can't do that!'" he added. "It felt very significant and I was like: 'Oh God you're really testing your audience', and good on them. It was a proper character journey but really, really fun to play."

But will the character be redeemed? "I genuinely don't know," Mohammed told ScreenRant.

"I know bits but not the details. We'll see if Nate manages to find his way back to Richmond. But the thing with Ted Lasso is the audience are possibly expecting a redemption arc for Nate, and I'd like to see one I think because that would be nice.

"But equally, I could well imagine the writers thinking: 'No, we're going to turn it on its head', because that's what they did in season two, playing against everyone's expectations, so he might be the one character they don't redeem."

According to an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Ted Lasso editors A.J. Catoline and Melissa McCoy say Rebecca and Nate will see some of the biggest character arcs of season three.

"[Nate's] on a trajectory, career wise…From season one as kitman, then he became a coach and now he's the coach of West Ham," Catoline said. "Jason is so very generous as a producer and creator. He gives all of the characters a storyline. I think that's why [the episodes] are so full…There so many storylines; he wants every character to have an arc."

Speaking to Deadline of what fans can expect to see of Rebecca, Waddingham teased: "When we see Rebecca again, she's a boss-ass b**ch. "She's 100 percent boss-ass bitch and then some. She’s fully there because she wants to be and there’s a change in her that I think was much needed. She's leading that group of players and wants the best for them.”

She continued: "As far as her personal life is concerned, it's delicious chaos as usual. That's life, right? You never have everything sorted."

Mohammed has been preparing for season three for a while now, with plans in place for his arc from the very start.

"I've known about Nate's three-season arc for a good while," the actor said (via ScreenRant). "It was before seasons two and three were commissioned, actually. I remember quite distinctly that I sat with Jason during the filming of [episode four,] the gala episode of season one.

"I can remember him outlining, broadly speaking, the three-season season arc – and particularly season two [having] a kind of Empire Strikes Back sort of feel to it.

"Whether the show itself is three seasons, I think that is still yet to be decided. I actually am not privy to that information."

Brett Goldstein is privy to that information, and has confirmed that the aim of season three is to provide a definitive (and potentially deadly) ending.

"We are writing it like that," he said when asked if season three is the final season. "It was planned as three. Spoiler alert: Everyone dies."

We're sure he's only teasing us with that revelation – though Mohammed has also hinted at a darker tone.

"Maybe he's a character who won't get that redemption arc. I won't give anything away, but all I'll say is it's another absolute rollercoaster," he said. "And honestly, we're just midway through filming. As much as I know where we're heading, I haven't seen some of the details of the latter scripts yet, so I can't fully comment on it. But it's very exciting."

"We were doing it bit by bit,” he continued. "So the ideal was that people would try and cling onto some kind of hope that he won't fully turn. But actually, every single decision he makes from episode seven onwards is the wrong one. And the final scene at the end of the season is when it all comes to a head."

All of that said, if Ted Lasso ends its career karate-kicking fans in the stands with a bleak ending, we'll eat a football boot (soccer shoe, for our American readers). Expect things to end on a high, when season three's finale does finally roll into the back of the net.

And the dressing room door does appear to be slightly ajar for more Lasso, thanks to some carefully-chosen remarks from writer/actor Brendan Hunt. Discussing the pressure of ending a show that so many people love, Hunt revealed that they're not thinking of it in show-ending terms.

"We didn't make a show that people liked because we were coming in here feeling like we had to get it perfect for everybody and to suddenly have that attitude now wouldn’t help the show be better,” Hunt said. "We have to just continue to just come in and do stuff that, that we like."

"But having said that, you know, we are approaching at least the end of this arc and it’s a funny thing. We do want to get it right. We want to be caring with how we give it to people."

"But also, if we're too precious about it, or if we worry about getting it all perfect, I just don't know what good that’s going to do us either. So we're really kind of caught in the middle there."

Woah, woah, woah, blow the whistle, ref! They're ending an 'arc', not the show as a whole? Does that mean we could get more Lasso later?

"Yes," Hunt said. "Another arc is possible after this, for sure. We have always seen it as some kind of three-beat thing. Originally those three beats were more going to be modeled on what [the British] The Office did, you know, six eps, a special, boom, we're done. We've certainly expanded those beats, but it does not mean that the whole kit and caboodle is getting chucked."

But before we start celebrating a goal that's about to be ruled offside, that sounds like we'll get three seasons and a special (maybe a movie?) before Lasso leaves the pitch for good. Any hopes for an American Office-style run are probably as likely as Jason Sudeikis scoring a winning penalty for England in the next World Cup final.

Meanwhile, things are just as complicated with the team off the pitch as it is on. Rebecca is feeling torn after a fling with young player, Sam, who turned down a massive opportunity at another club to remain with AFC Richmond, albeit not for her.

"I can't tell you anything about that! I can’t spill the beans," Jimoh told Deadline on whether Sam and Rebecca will continue dating. "What I can say is that we do get into Sam's love life a little bit this season and it will be very interesting for people to see how that all unfolds and where it goes.

"You'll see what his relationship with Rebecca is like and what it turns into. It will be really interesting no matter what side of the fence you’re on, whether you're a TedBecca fan or SamBecca fan. There's going to be a really interesting resolution for all the characters."

Keeley and Roy seem on the verge of splitting too, with the former footballer worrying his business-mogul girlfriend is going to tire of him and move on.

Coming up with a plan to whisk her away for a six-week holiday, Roy was left gutted when she said no because she needed to set up her new business. Add on the fact that Keeley's ex Jamie Tartt declared his love for her, too, and it's all to play for.

One thing's for certain – you can expect the show's bittersweet tone to remain firmly in place.

Filming might have started, but we don't have any Ted Lasso season three footage yet, and we fear it's going to be a while. Sorry, Greyhounds!

However, there is still plenty of new content for us to keep us occupied, with the team often appearing in skits for good causes.

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

Starting with their festive mini-special last Christmas where Ted turned claymation and frets over losing his moustache, in March they got together for Red Nose Day to help raise some money.

The results were... mixed to say the least, but the heart is always there.

Diamond dooooogs out!
