A large specialty program, the learning and behavior specialist program at Illinois State prepares students to work with individuals who have cognitive, emotional, or learning disabilities. You can choose from three specialist areas as you take your courses: deaf and hard of hearing, learning and behavior, and low vision and blindness. You will also complete a full semester of student teaching, during which you’ll be awarded 12 semester hours of credit.

The Bachelor of Arts at Clemson University prepares learners to work with students with mild-to-moderate disabilities in grades pre-K through 12. You’ll enjoy a curriculum that focuses on research-based assessment and instructional practices and have access to field-based learning experiences as soon as your very first class. In addition to required field experiences, the program offers plenty of service and leadership opportunities, too. 

You’ll enjoy placement opportunities at both the elementary and high school level. The degree is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation and the International Council for Exceptional Children. It exceeds the state’s minimum requirements for field experience hours before student teaching and includes coursework that will enable you to add an elementary education certification to the special education licensure, too. 

All in all, you’ll complete more than 160 hours of experience with just your senior year field experience alone. Before you graduate, you’ll present an electronic portfolio that will bring together your major accomplishments throughout the program.

The special education P-12 and elementary education K-8 programs at Western Washington University are dual endorsement degrees that enable you to apply for licensure in two distinct areas. All in all, you’ll complete a total of 158 credit hours of study.
