Best daily moisturizer for 4c low porosity hair

how to moisturize 4c hair daily

Since my big chop in 2020 and the inception of this website, I have been trying really hard to not mess up my hair. I have followed a number of vloggers in the natural hair community and bought the best 4c hair products to make sure that my natural hair is healthy and strong.

My new 4c hair care regimen includes bi-weekly deep conditioning treatments and natural ingredients such as avocado masks and aloe vera oil. In addition, I wear my natural hair in protective styles most of the year, all in an effort to grow my 4c hair stronger and longer. However, there is one thing I have been struggling to figure out. And that is how to moisturize 4c hair daily.

Every day I ask myself whether my natural hair is moisturized enough, oiled up enough, or if I need to do something outside of my weekly routine. And I’m sure you ask yourself the same questions. That’s why I decided it’s time to figure out how to keep 4c hair moisturized for days after wash day. So in this post, you will learn how to moisturize natural hair daily for massive growth.

Should I wet my 4C hair every day?

The answer is yes. Yes, you should absolutely wet your 4c hair every day, especially if you have dry natural hair. However, what does it mean to wet 4c hair? In contrast to common belief, wetting or even moisturizing your natural hair does not mean that you have to full-on wash it with shampoo.

Rather than soaking it in water and leaving it at that, there is a much better way to moisturize your hair daily without causing any harm.

The truth is your natural hair needs water in order to avoid hair damage, however, depending on the porosity of your hair a small amount daily is often enough. Especially, if you use the right products for your hair type that will help with moisture retention.

How to moisturize 4c hair daily

When I found out about the following technique to moisturize 4c hair, I was stunned. So easy, but so unknown.

The best way to moisturize your 4c hair daily is by simply using a refresher spray and misting your hair with it every day.

Now you might ask yourself what is a refresher spray. Well, let me enlighten you. A refresher spray is a light solution of water and a moisturizing conditioner of your choice. All you have to do is to mix warm water and your favorite leave-in conditioner in a water spray bottle. Now anytime your hair feels dry or brittle, you can simply spritz your hair to apply some extra moisture.

And the good news is, this technique does not just work for healthy hair, but also for brittle hair and dry hair.

What should I moisturize my 4c hair with?

Now that you know one of the best methods to quickly moisturize your 4c hair daily, the question is what products can you use in general. As I mentioned before, I can only use the Cantu leave-in conditioner for my hair due to my castor oil allergy. This moisturizer includes shea butter as its main ingredient and is available worldwide, which was one of my main requirements.

However, I did roam the internet and found a number of daily moisturizers that work great on 4c hair. And the one that was suggested the most is the TGIN Butter Cream Daily Moisturizer. It’s known to restore dry, damaged, and color-treated hair and will improve the shine of your 4c hair.

It’s a perfect conditioner for mid-week hair care because it moisturizes your hair and then locks it in. However, the best part for me is, that it does not include castor oil either, so I can’t wait to get my hands on it and try it out myself.

4c hair moisturizing routine

Now that we understand that you do not have to wash your 4c hair daily to keep it moisturized, I figured I’d share my weekly 4c hair moisturizing routine. This 4c hair care regimen will keep as much moisture as possible for days after you washed your hair with a deep conditioner or co-washed it. And once you have that in place, you can simply re-moisturize your natural hair three to four days after your wash routine and be done with it.

Step 1) Infuse water into your hair

Okay, so here is the thing. Many of us have been taught from a young age that water is not good for coarse hair. In my case, my mom used to swear that too much water would dry my hair out.

Well, that’s simply not true. Water is essential to keeping your hair hydrated, regardless of your hair’s porosity level. But you can’t just soak your hair in water and then leave it at that. Adding enough water to your hair is only the first step before you continue with the loc method.

You also want to use this step to carefully detangle your hair. Simply use your fingers or a detangling brush of your choice.

Step 2) Apply a moisturizer

The first step in the lco method is to apply a moisturizer of your choice. There are plenty of good natural hair moisturizers you can choose from, just make sure you figure out whether you have high porosity hair or low porosity hair. Understanding that will help you with moisture retention. You ideally want to choose a water-based moisturizer for your 4c hair.

Step 3) Steam your hair

By now it is no secret anymore that you achieve the best results when you use a hair steamer. Steaming helps the moisturizing product properly penetrate your hair strands and lifts your hair follicles. That allows the product to be completely absorbed and not just sit on top of your hair. All you need is about 10 minutes under the steamer for it to get some hydration.

Step 4) Apply (essential) oil to your scalp

The next step to hydrate hair naturally is to apply your favorite oil to your scalp. However, you do not want to apply a hair oil every day, because some oils are very thick and will clog up your hair follicles. Great oils to use are essential oils such as castor oil, jojoba oil, or tee tree oil. But you can also use natural oils, such as avocado oil, coconut oil, or olive oil.

Step 5) Add butter to your hair

The last step in your weekly 4c hair moisturizing routine is to add some sort of butter or cream to your hair. I like to use organic Shea Butter for this step. Using a cream will help lock in the moisture you just applied and prevent moisture loss. And that’s it. By simply repeating these 5 steps every week you will enjoy moisturized hair all week.

How to moisturize 4c hair at night

I promise you that the weekly 4c hair moisturizing is enough, coupled with the daily moisturizing spray. However, if your hair lost a lot of moisture during the day due to A/C or cold air outside, then you can follow the following steps to moisturize your hair at night and set yourself up for greatness the next day.

  1. Spray your hair with your refresher spray, including water and leave-in conditioner
  2. Braid or twist your hair to protect it overnight.
  3. Put on a satin bonnet or silk scarf to avoid friction while asleep.
