Books for the Homebound provides books, audio books, music CDs and/or movies to adult Knox County residents who are unable to come to the library without assistance due to a permanent or temporary disability and have no one available to pick up materials for them. Librarians select the materials and volunteers take them to the patrons. Volunteers choose their library pick-up location, their delivery areas in Knox County, and the number of patrons. Deliveries to each patron are made once a month on a regular ongoing basis. This requires a long-term commitment on the part of the volunteer. Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) are trained community volunteers appointed by the Juvenile Court Judge to speak for the best interest of a child who is brought into the court system due to abuse or neglect. CASA volunteers do not need to be a lawyer or a social worker. People from all walks of life can become a CASA. Volunteers are fully trained and well supported. A candidate must pass a background check, participate in 30 classroom hours of training and must agree to stay on their assigned case until it closes.
