Blue runner fish good to eat

Replies

  • I've eaten them many times. Don't expect anywhere near snapper quality but better than the yellow jack and mullet. We can't always catch A-rated fish everytime we fish but still gonna bring home dinner. We deep fry them fillet than simmer in tomatoes in a skillet to help give the fish more taste. Texture isn't bad.

  • They are great bait...Lots of other fish to eat for me personally, but like stated above you can sure as heck cook it and eat it

  • I'll take mullet anytime over blue runner.

  • Never eaten it myself, but the meat does look far better than jack crevalles....and yes I've tried those. Not doing that again, well, depending on how hungry I am.

If the above poster is talking about the true "yellow jack" of south Florida and the Keys, well those things are **** good eating. one of the best kept secrets of table fare.

But hey what do I know I like bonito....don't knock it till you try it!

Maybe I'll try blue runner one of these days.

  • I tried it once. I thought it was pretty good. Better than AJ for sure.

  • I have eaten blue runner before, when that is all that was biting around the pier and it is a decent meal IF.... the fish is big enough to get good fillets... IF the fish has been iced in cooler... IF the dark red meat in back of fillets is removed (very strong fishy taste)...IF you fry it and eat it same day, a squeeze of lemon and cold brew...YUM...

Jack cravalle... would not waste my time, I send them back in the water regardless of their size or use them for bait, same as smaller blue runners... great bait

  • I can take both blue runner (want large ones) or jack crevalle (under 10lbs) and turn them into the best tuna salad you've ever had.... But most won't want to go to the trouble. The recipe was actually posted years ago in Florida Sportsman... here's how it goes...

Filet the fish, then filet the meat off the skin, then remove any of the red meat along the center of each filet. Prepare a poaching solution, simmering water -just deep enough to cover the filets with seasonings (I like any crab boil seasonings or just Old Bay...). Place filets in simmering water and cook them gently for exactly ten minutes per pound of fish. After the time is up remove filets intact and place on plate - pat dry, then a drop of olive oil on each filet rubbed into the surface to coat each one... Take the plate and place it in the refrigerator overnight... The next day place cooked fish in a bowl, flake with a fork, then make your usual tuna salad - you'll be astonished at how good (and fresh) it tastes - a real improvement over canned tuna - any day...
