Some would argue it never really went away. I personally love anything with cane – whether it’s a piece of furniture or even something as simple as a basket. So if you are wondering whether cane furniture is out of style – the answer is nope – it’s definitely not.

I love it because it adds just the right amount of texture to your spaces. Cane (which is actually a plant, did you know this!?) is typically added to the seats and backs of furniture and is typically a warm color. This makes it a beautiful addition to your rooms as a dining chair or even just a simple accent chair plopped in the corner.

Today, I’m rounding up my favorite caned dining chairs for all budgets and all styles. There is something here for every style, from traditional to retro to vintage to french country. Some of these even have a bistro chair vibe to them. It’s hard to pick a favorite.

Are you guys familiar with Homary? Let me know if you have! I have not tried them yet, but their offerings and prices are enticing to me. Homary is a mecca for all things home. The best part about them is they cut out the middleman and bring the savings to you. They offer some of the SAME products that other stores carry (but with lower prices).

They offer free shipping as well which is huge considering a lot of other places want to charge you high prices + a high shipping (or handling) fee. However, it’s still worth looking into these higher end companies if you have the budget for their amazing customer support and quality.

The only thing I’m wondering about is the overall reviews. Some are really good and some are really bad. So, I think definitely give them a look and make your own informed decision. They have a lot to offer – kind of like Wayfair (but with less reviews). Here are some of their cane dining chair options at the moment.

Amazon Cane Dining Chairs

Amazon’s selection of home goods is getting better and better. And it’s just easy. It’s definitely a go-to of mine when it comes to purchasing stuff for our house. I like their prices, customer service and fast, free shipping. Plus – a lot of times you can score FREE returns, which is saying something these days. There’s nothing like having to return a piece of furniture AND pay $50 restocking fee to ruin your day. Or is that just me? Check out Amazon’s selection of caned dining chairs below.

Amber Interiors

I feel like whenever I’m in need of a good dose of inspiration – I head right on over to Amber Interiors. I love perusing her shoppe. She always styles everything to perfection and makes me think about different ways to decorate. It definitely gets the wheels turning and it’s no different with her selection of cane dining chairs. Check out the Delany Chair and Stella Chair below.

The Stella might be my personal favorite.

france & son

If you haven’t heard of France & Son, allow me to introduce them to you. They are a smaller company but offer high quality furniture for reasonable prices. They really have some beautiful furniture here friends. They offer custom upholstery and a variety of options with their furniture, so if you like to customize things, they are worth checking out. I picked their Britt Cane Dining Chair here because it’s so elegant. I just love that curved back.

McGee & Co

Another favorite. Shea McGee sure knows a thing or two about the perfect furnishings, and I love her collection of caned furniture. This Irma chair is handmade in Indonesia and has a simple, scandi vibe to it. It’s just beautiful in my opinion.

And while you’re there, check out the Landon Chair – which comes in armed and lounge chairs too. Choose between either the warm wood or black versions. It’s a traditional style that will fit in with most spaces. The armed chair would also make a good accent chair.

Wayfair Cane Dining Chairs

I always have to include my tried and true Wayfair on this list. They have a very good selection, fast shipping (on most items), great brand collaborations (Kelly Clarkson, anyone?) and average prices. I know I am not spending a fortune, but not going so cheap where I worry about the quality. Definitely check out the Admiranda Chair (in two finishes), the Atticus, Staple Hill and Alban chairs. It’s almost hard to narrow down at this place.

cb2

CB2 is definitely more modern with a minimalist vibe. I love the look of their Nadia Chair which pairs cane, wood and boucle all in one seat! You can purchase this in a set of 4, as a counter stool or just a regular dining chair. This chair also comes in a white wood version!

Also worth taking a peek at the beautiful Thea Cane Dining Chair. A little more traditional with warm wood tones, the Thea Chair is constructed of solid wood and natural cane. It’s just stunning.

west elm

West Elm is the queen of mid century modern, and you’l love this Onni Dining Chair. This chair is constructed in Vietnam of American walnut and features a cushioned seat and woven cane back. It’s really beautiful.

Target Cane Dining Chairs

Now that Target has Studio McGee, Hearth and Hand, Project 62 and Opalhouse to name a few – they are always a must see store option for me. You can’t beat these prices! The one downside is stuff seems to frequently go out of stock which is a bummer. But I’ve ordered lots of furniture from Target before and been so happy with it. In fact, I’m writing this blog post from cloffice Target desk as we speak. One my favorite purchases ever.

Check out these beautiful caned dining chairs from Target.

Urban Outfitters

Urban Outfitters is an amazing sources of UNIQUE products. You just won’t find their home goods anywhere else. The same is true for their sister store, Anthropologie (next one down). I love the look of the Elise Arm Chair. Featuring a teak frame, an upholstered seat and a cane back. It is kind of vintage looking but modern at the same time. A great dining chair OR accent chair in my opinion.

Anthropologie

Like Amber Interiors, I go to Anthropologie when I need a zap of inspiration. I love the way they style everything here. You’ll love the Zoey and Ashton Caned Chairs. Actually, check out their Ellison Chair too while you’re at it. The Zoey features a linen seat and caned back. I love the simplicity of this chair. With the Ashton, it’s a little more modern with the caned back and seat but features arms – so this one could work at the head of the table or as an accent chair.

Ballard Design

If you haven’t visited Ballard Design yet, it’s time to give them a look. Their overall vibe is somewhat traditional meets French Country. I love their selection of furniture, and the Gilmore Caned Dining Chair is no exception.

lulu & georgia

Remember how I said certain home brands can give me a jolt of inspo when I need it? Add Lulu & Georgia to that list. In fact, I think they have one of the best selections of caned furniture out there today. Check out their Summer Dining Chair, constructed of beechwood and cane with a gentle slope to the arms. It’s great at the table or as an accent. Choose between natural or black colors.

Pottery Barn

Pottery Barn is like Lulu in that it has one of the best selections of caned furniture. I highlighted my favorites here, but their website is chock full of them so be sure to click around once you get there. That barrel back chair is swoonworthy!

Walmart Cane Dining Chairs

I love Walmart. We all need to get over the stigma that Walmart doesn’t have good home goods. That could not be further from the truth. Their Baxton Studio collection of caned chairs is one my favorites on this list and comes in a variety of styles and colors (if you don’t want the seat caned they have an option for that).

I also love these French Country Caned Chairs in a set of 4.

Are cane back chairs out of style?

While it's never completely gone out of style, caned furniture, featuring its iconic weave pattern, is now being used to add texture and just the right amount of vintage flair to interiors across the country. Used in both new and antique furniture, the material can make almost any piece look lighter and warmer.

What can replace a cane back chair?

Upholstered Seat A solid, fabric-covered seat is one of the sturdiest replacements for seat caning. Cut a piece of plywood to fit over the seat frame, then cover it with cushion foam, batting and durable upholstery fabric stapled to the bottom of the plywood. Screw the new seat to the chair frame from below.

Are cane back chairs comfortable?

The seats are firm but comfortable. I like that the cane backs are curved and have a little give to them, so they are surprisingly comfortable. The only negative I noticed in terms of comfort was that the cane back can catch a little on fine fabric like chiffon. However, we haven't had a problem with it.

How long do cane chairs last?

With reasonable care, attention, and use, your cane-seated chair should last from 5-25 years. But if you notice a few broken strands or a hole becoming bigger, place a padded cushion over the seat to gain many more months or even years of use.
