This is my first time posting in this sub, so please let me know if I’m not giving adequate information or if I make any breech of etiquette. I have little-to-no experience with the mechanical side of cars (I can change oil and rotate tires so closer to “no experience”) Today my 2013 Subaru Outback started making a sound like a bike with a baseball card in its spokes while accelerating at low speeds. It seems to decrease as my car switches to higher gears, and returns as I slow down. The noise increases in tempo as I press the gas, increasing in tandem with engine RPM rather than tires’ rotation. The sound becomes significantly louder in low tempo than high. By the time I got home, the noise was persisting at a low tempo while I was in park and idling. I got out of the car to listen to it, and I was surprised at how much the sound had been muffled through the cab. It’s quite loud. I imagine this has something to do with a belt, and I’ll need to have it worked on. I am about 3 miles from a shop. Is it safe to drive that far or will I be risking further, expensive damage by driving my car to the shop rather than having it towed? Once I do get it to a shop, what do I tell them? The fact that its only under acceleration baffles me. Over on the right side.... the only thing over there is the transmission, does it stay in gear and does it shift? Anything like a bad CV would make noise any time the car was moving. If its only under acceleration, then its gotta be a noise thats a result of the engine rocking backwards. The only thing I can
think of is a motor mount, but once it rocks back, it would stay there... it wouldnt bang around. Stock XJ Cherokee Tech. All XJ Non-modified/stock questions go here XJ (84-01) Engine is making sound similar to a card in a bike spokes10-10-2015, 12:43 PMNewbie Thread Starter

Yesterday started her up and while idling the jeep was making a sound similar to that of when kids put cards in their bike spokes. When accelerating or revving the engine the sounds gets quite a bit worse. I had noticed a noise about two days prior to this, but it didn't sound anything like this and I didn't think much of it. The jeep is due for an oil change soon approx. 2900 miles on this oil and filter. (I do a lot of city driving for short distances) My first thought was that it was a cracked head since I do have the notorious 0331 head. I inspected the oil level and checked to see if coolant was in it. Everything looked normal. After having a few friends look at it their first guesses were a lifter or maybe even a intake manifold leak. I ended up bringing it to a shop they checked to make sure the torque converter bolts were tight which they were. I left the jeep with them and they are going to pull the filter off inspect that for flakes. If the filter checks out they are gonna drop the pan and check the rods and bearings. Basically my questions are what does this sound like to you how much do you think a shop would charge me. (They are charging me for 3 hours of labor $88 to drop the pan and another $88 if I want it put back on) At this point I'm assuming its gonna be bad and best case scenario is to find a new engine and find someone to drop it in for me. Plus I wasn't having any power steering, charging or cooling issues while driving it to the shop. 10-10-2015, 07:17 PMSeasoned Member

Have you pulled the valve cover yet to look for anything weird with the valve train? 10-10-2015, 09:36 PMCF Veteran

If you don't find anything you will still need to buy oil, oil filter, oil pan gasket and rear main seal since you're in there. Therefore, see what the folks here can help diagnose or offer suggestions for first. That engine has plenty of life left unless it's trashed somehow but I don't think it would be since its running. 10-11-2015, 01:40 AMCF Veteran

Might be a thrashy valve train, but that usually develops over time with engines with more miles on them. Could be one or more collapsed lifters. Take off the oil filler cap. Run the engine, and look in the valve cover area to make sure you have plenty of oil flow in there. Do you ever have to add coolant, even a little? 10-11-2015, 08:27 AMCF Veteran

It probably all started with a yelp or some oh-****! type of sound in critter-speak. 10-11-2015, 09:51 AM::CF Moderator::
