I try to restart & the motor sounds more like a drill than a starter turning the engine over. I immediately think it is the timing chain. I pull the distributer cap (no spark). I turn the motor over & the rotor cap turns as the motor turns over. I pulled the valve cover. The timing chain has pieces of timing chain guides embeded in the links. Since the valves move up & down the rotor turns too, I figure the chain must have jumped a link or two. So, I do a timing chain replacement w/o removing the head (pretty simple process). I line everything up at TDC & put it all back together & I still have the same thing -- starter turns engine over, but sounds more like a drill than a starter cranking over the engine. Any ideas? 11-12-2003, 08:50 AMRegistered User

I ask because a few of weekends ago a buddy had a similar symptom with his 1st gen. He had been out messing around on the trails the day before, got home, and the next day the starter was just going "brrzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzing!" when he hit the key. It's a manual, so he could start it with a push. I thought it might be that the solenoid was stuck from the muck he was playing in. So we popped the hood, and I smacked the starter with a rubber mallet. The whole starter shook! What had happened was that he had lost the top nut on the starter mount, and the bottom bolt was just about backed out of the tranny housing. That let the starter "lay back" enough such that it didn't engage the flywheel when it spun. That caused the "brrzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzing!" sound, and of course kept the truck from starting. We went to Lowe's, got a replacement nut for the top along with a couple of lockwashers, and he was all set. Registered User Thread Starter

I'm going to check the compression tonight. Of course the compression test will be done on a cold motor, but I should still get some readings. thanks, Related Topics Thread Thread Starter Forum Last Post greasyglue 86-95 Trucks & 4Runners 24 12-12-2015 12:57 PM RobotMoose Tool Time 5 09-02-2015 05:53 AM Dakotaneu 86-95 Trucks & 4Runners 4 08-15-2015 07:24 AM clok 86-95 Trucks & 4Runners 1 08-01-2015 09:42 PM colinmil Newbie Tech Section 2 07-06-2015 04:03 PM 4runner, 99, converter, drill, engine, flywheel, makes, pneumatic, sound, sounds, spins, starter, torque, toyota, turns What car sounds like when starter goes out?A bad starter's tell-tale noise is loud clicking. It can either have a fast tempo, click-click-click-click-click-click-click-click or a slower lilt of click, click, click, click. No other part makes these noises when they fail, so if you hear either, you're likely going to be on the hook for a brand-new starter.

This lack of electrical current could be because of a failing battery, a bad connection at the battery or even a bad alternator that isn't properly recharging your battery. Best case scenario, your battery or posts need cleaning.
Why does my car sound like it's struggling to start? Why does my car sound like it's struggling to start? If you hear a rapid clicking or loud cranking sound when trying to start your car, it's likely a problem with your car's battery or alternator, but there could be another engine issue at work. A grinding noisecould also indicate problems with your car's starter.
Why does my car make a weak noise when I start it?If the vehicle sounds weak when you turn the key, as in it cranks slowly, or struggles to turn over, then it is most likely a battery or starter issue.
