Pet Lover's License Plate ProgramProgram PurposeThe California Department of Food and Agriculture's (CDFA) Pet Lover's License Plate Program is supported by Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) charging specified additional fees for the issuance, renewal, or transfer of specialized license plates. You can help support agricultural education and the Pet Lover's program by purchasing a special interest license plate at your local DMV office or online today. 2023 Pet Lover’s Technical Review Committee MembersThe CDFA is welcoming volunteers with knowledge and expertise in California's veterinary, animal rescue/shelter, and animal services industries to serve on the 2023 Pet Lover’s Technical Review Committee (TRC). This committee reviews, evaluates, and makes recommendations to CDFA on proposals submitted for funding to Pet Lover’s. All individuals interested in serving on the TRC must submit a completed TRC Application, Conflict of Interest form, and a copy of their résumé or curriculum vitae to before 5 p.m. on Wednesday, December 21, 2022. TRC members will be required to complete a statement of economic interest (Form 700), and complete Ethics and Sexual Harassment Prevention trainings. AwardsThe California Department of Food and Agriculture is pleased to announce the: Prevention of Animal Homelessness and Cruelty Voluntary Tax Contribution Fund (Prevention Fund)Program Purpose and FundingThe California Department of Food and Agriculture's (CDFA) Prevention Fund Program is supported by California taxpayer contributions and anticipates awarding up to $250,000 on a competitive basis to be distributed to municipal animal control agencies, and eligible society for the prevention of animal cruelty affiliates and humane society affiliates for the sole purpose of spay and neuter activities to eliminate cat and dog homelessness. CDFA seeks to maximize the benefit to the public of each Prevention Fund dollar spent. Funds will be awarded based on the number of animals to be altered per dollar requested. Applicant organizations that are ineligible for, or have not received funds from, the Pet Lover's License Plate Grant Program may be prioritized. Eligibility and ExclusionsMunicipal animal control agencies are defined as a city, county, or city and county animal control agency or shelter. The following are now eligible: a society for the prevention of animal cruelty affiliate or humane society affiliate under contract to provide all animal control services for a local public agency. To be considered, applicants must be current on their reporting requirements to the State Department of Public Health, Veterinary Public Health Section. Awards cannot be used for administrative expenses or for any purpose outside of California. TimelineThe 2022 Application period is now closed. How much is it to spay a cat?Private vets cost anywhere from $200–$400 for a spay/neuter procedure. You also have the option to bring your kitty to a lower-cost clinic. These are typically run by nonprofits and all surgeries are performed by licensed veterinarians. You'll probably take your cat home the same day they receive treatment.
