The American Red Cross Lifeguard recertification course is for those who are currently certified Lifeguards (certifications have a 120 day grace period on expiration-Subject to change based on Red Cross Guidelines).  The course consists of two (2) modules – online and classroom/pool, both of which are required for those wanting to re-certify their Lifeguarding certificate (this is a BLENDED LEARNING FORMAT, with a 7 hour online course that must be completed in full prior to attending the skill session).

Checking Your Current/Recently Completed Certifications

To look up your certification, go to http://www.redcross.org/take-a-class/digital-certificateand type in the email address you gave to you instructor in the box. If that does not work you can click Search By Name & Date, type in your first and last name and select the year you took class ( you can select the month but you do not have to ) ( even if the year is correct, physically select the correct year ) click FIND then select the certification you wish to see. Lifeguard Certification Pre-Course: Water Skills Requirement Class

Each participant must be able to demonstrate and complete the following requirements:

  • Swim 300 yards continuously (no stopping/ touching the bottom of the pool)  demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using  freestyle, breaststroke or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles are allowed.
  • Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits, or with their hands out of the water.
  • Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using freestyle or breaststroke. The face may be in or out of the water. Submerge to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object at the surface of the water. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps. Swim goggles are not allowed.

Lifeguard Certification Course

Course Tuition – $275.00: new price and course structure effective for all certifications after August 1, 2020 

The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over. Topics include: water rescue skills, surveillance & recognition, first aid, breathing and cardiac emergencies, CPR, AED & more!

The Blended Learning version of the ARC LG Cert course combines the online learning and on-site sessions to build on the same knowledge and skills to train lifeguards to act with speed and confidence in emergency situation both in and out of the water. The online format allows participants to complete the interactive lessons on their own time, allowing the Instructor led sessions to reinforce learning and emphasize on skill building.

In order to signup for the Lifeguard Certification Course applicants must complete the Lifeguard Pre-Course Water Skills Requirement. 

The online portion must be completed PRIOR to the start of the in-class portion. The online portion can take up to 9 or more hours and can be found by CLICKING HERE

For the in-class learning, registrants will receive a 4-pack of station passes which must be completed before receiving certification is received.  Sessions and topics are as follows:

  • Dryland – First Aid, CPR, AED, Blood-Borne Pathogens Training
  • Water Skills/In-Water: Must have completed Dryland before taking this session
  • Spinal Injury Management/In-Water
  • Finals Skills and Written Exams/In-Water and Dryland: ALL SESSIONS MUST BE COMPLETED PRIOR TO THIS SESSION

In order to pass the course and become a certified Lifeguard each participant must complete and pass all of the course prerequisites, interactive online sessions, pass the written exams with an 80% or higher, and complete all of the necessary final skill testing scenarios.

Once passed each participant will receive certifications in Lifeguard Certification, First Aid, CPR & AED Training all valid for 2 years, along with a blood borne pathogen training certificate valid for 1 year!

Prerequisites:

  • Must be 15 years or older on or before the last day of class
  • Must have a valid EMAIL address
  • Must complete the online content before the first class
  • Females must wear a 1 piece bathing suite.

Lifeguard Re-Certification Course

Course Tuition – $175.00

If you are needing to get re-certified, you must have a current LG certification or have one that expires no more than 30 days past the expiration date in order to take this course. You are required to bring your current or expired LG cert to the first class to verify eligibility.

Each participant must complete the prerequisites on the first day of class in order to complete the re-certification. You can find the list of prerequisites listed above, under Lifeguard Certification.

This course will prepare you to recognize and care for a variety of first aid, breathing, and cardiac emergencies involving adults, children and infants and meets OSHA/workplace requirements.

This is a blended learning course including an online portion and an instructor-led classroom skill session. The online portion must be completed prior to attending the instructor-led classroom skills session. Proof of completion of the online portion must be presented at the start of the instructor-led classroom skills session.

Upon successful completion of this course you will receive a digital certificate for Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED valid for two years.

The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach the American Red Cross Lifeguarding, Lifeguarding Blended Learning, Shallow Water Lifeguarding, Water Park Skills, CPR/AED For the Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers, Administering Emergency Oxygen and Bloodborne Pathogens Training courses and/or modules

Course Prerequisites:

  • Be at least 17 years of age
  • Possess a current basic-level American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certification
  • Successfully complete the online session of the Lifeguarding Instructor Course, which consists of the following: Orientation to the American Red Cross, and Orientation to the Lifeguarding Instructor Course and Precourse Exam – The online portion must be completed PRIOR to the start of the in-class portion. The online portion can take up to 9 or more hours and can be found by CLICKING HERE.
  • Sucessfully complete the Pre-Course Session
  • Obtain the Lifeguarding Instructor’s Manual and Lifeguarding Manual after you have successfully completed the Precourse Session

Criteria for certification:

  • Successfully complete the Pre-Course Skills Session
  • Attend and actively participate in all course sessions

  • Score a minimum of 80 percent on the instructor course final written exam

How old do you have to be to be a lifeguard in Virginia?

At what age can someone be a lifeguard? At 15 you can be a lifeguard at a pool. You must be 16 or older to be a lifeguard at a beach. (Code of Virginia § 40.1-100 (B)(2)).

Lifeguards in the State of Minnesota – MN , must pass the following prerequisite criteria and obtain a lifeguard certification from a Minnesota Department of Health approved certification provider. All lifeguard classes include CPR/AED and First Aid. Prerequisites: 1) Minimum age: 15 years.
