"new fill" capacity is approx. 1.5L (1.58 qt). Both of these are according to Bentley for the 2004. A little cryptic, but I hope it helps. 10-23-2009, 02:09 PMAudiWorld Newcomer

Did my transmission fluid as well. The information and DIY's out there weren't much help as I cam across many variations. Let me know if I can help. 2004 A4 Ultrasport AudiWorld Member
Join Date: May 2007 Posts: 139 Likes: 0 Received 0 Likes on 0 Posts did my rear diff and tranny fluid last week as well... 2004 3.0Q M6 2 quarts in the back, a little more than three in the Tranny / diff. 10 mm hex was what I needed on all four bolts (fills and drains) Be careful on the tranny fill, It can be a bitch to get loose. My buddy actually stripped his on his 2000 S4 when we tried to break it loose, and mine took some work to get going. -w 10-24-2009, 04:46 AM

The weight and capacity will be listed in your owner's manual; your differential will usually hold as much as 3 quarts.
How many quarts of gear oil does a rear end take? When the fluid begins to drip out of the fill plug, this means that the differential is full. You might also refer to your owners manual to ensure you are adding enough. Most rear differentials on these vehicles take between 1-2 quarts of gear oil.
How many quarts of differential oil do I need?To fill up each differential, you'll need anywhere from 1 to 4 quarts of oil in most cases (again dependent on the vehicle model). What is this? Note that the cost above only applies to a single differential housing. If you have all wheel drive, you may need to double the cost depending on your maintenance interval.
What type of fluid goes in the rear differential?Differential oil is sometimes referred to as gear oil and is found in the axle housing. It's designed to perform under high-pressure situations, rather than high temperatures like engine oil. Differential fluid: Lubricates clutch packs, gears and bearings.
