How to cover dark circles and bags under eyes

Getting rid of dark circles is a beauty trick we’d all love to master, but the amount of advice, quick-fixes and beauty hacks out there can be overwhelming.

To help set you on the right track to brighter, more youthful-looking eyes, we’ve spoken to the experts to discover exactly what could be causing your dark circles – and how to help erase them...

What causes dark circles?

“Dark circles, or Periorbital Hyperpigmentation, is a very common cosmetic concern seen in clinical practice,” says Dr. Zoya Diwan, cosmetic skin doctor and director at Trikwan Aesthetics. “More and more, patients are getting fed up with using super-high coverage make-up and want to tackle the root of the problem.”

While genetics and bone structure do play a role in determining the appearance of dark circles, it’s not all about your DNA, explains Diwan. “Whilst there is a huge genetic component to the cause of this condition in many people, there are also multiple lifestyle factors that can lead to dark circles and many are avoidable!”

Scroll down to discover the lifestyle tweaks, skincare switch-ups and make-up tricks to help get rid of those dark circles now...

How to get rid of dark circles

1. Upgrade your eye cream

If you’re religiously applying your eye cream morning and night, but not seeing much of a difference, it may be worth upgrading to a vitamin-laden formula for an extra brightening boost. Vitamin C is the beauty buzzword to know now – and for good reason. It is a tyrosinase inhibitor, which means it helps to prevent melanin production and fight hyperpigmentation. "It is ideal for fighting the first signs of photo-ageing around the eye area,” explains Linda Blahr, National Head of Education and Training for SkinCeuticals. What's more, it can also help activate the production of collagen to prevent lines and wrinkles.

2. Change your under-eye concealer

A swipe of concealer is of course one of the quickest ways to make your dark circles vanish – but choose a formula that’s too matte or too dry, and it can actually work against you. Try switching to an illuminating formula: these radiant concealers contain pearlescent particles and brightening pigments to ‘bounce’ the light back out from under your eyes. The effect is subtle yet remarkable. From the classic Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat to Trinny London's skincare-makeup hybrid BFF Eye, here are the best (and most-hardworking) concealers for dark circles.

3. Increase your caffeine

We’re not talking about your morning coffee here – in fact, caffeine has been shown to help shift toxins under the eyes when applied topically.

Strictly speaking, caffeine will not work on brightening the colour of your dark circles, but it can help to reduce the puffiness that creates the appearance of bags. “Caffeine actually helps target the blood vessels by causing them to constrict and pushing more blood flow through the eyes,” says Diwan.

4. Tackle under-eye hyperpigmentation with retinol

“Most medical-grade treatments include ingredients that target the melanocyte cells, stopping them from producing the pigment that leads to dark spots,” says Diwan. "Retinoids are derivatives of Vitamin A, and act to slow the melanocytes while promoting the production of collagen, leading to improved skin quality, smoothness and reduced darkness.”

Where some retinol skincare products come hand in hand with initial flaking and dryness, (as the cell turnover increases,) the best new retinol-infused eye creams are gentle enough to offer all of the renewing benefits without the side effects.

5. Amp up the fatty acids

According to dermatologist Dr. Dennis Gross, fatty acids can help in improving the appearance of your skin, including those dark circles. “It’s important to remember skin requires essential fatty acids that aren’t produced naturally in the body, so eating things like avocado, cheese, salmon, and other dairy products can be beneficial,” he says. “These essential fatty acids regulate cell function and help to maintain a healthy cell membrane that is strong enough to hold the water and nutrients it needs.”

6. Consider colour theory

Another way to get the best results from a concealer is to consider colour theory: it’s better to neutralise the shadowy tones under your eyes than simply mask them with thick layers of product.

If your under-eyes have a red or pink tint, a concealer with a yellow undertone will balance things out. And if your dark circles are more purple or blue, try brightening the cool tones with a peachy concealer. We love this pinky formula from Charlotte Tilbury.

7. Have an early night

As cliche as it sounds, lack of sleep is actually one of the most noticeable causes of dark under-eye circles. “Your skin needs 8 hours sleep a night to fully repair," says Blair.

Dr. Gross agrees. “Lack of sleep can put your body into flight or fight mode, which means your brain takes every molecule of oxygen it can from the blood, so a darker, more deoxygenated blood flows through our veins to the other areas of the body,” he explains. “This dark blood is most visible in the transparent skin under our eyes and is what causes the appearance of those darkened rings.” So if you really needed another excuse to head off to bed an hour early, there you have it.

How does Kim Kardashian cover her dark circles?

In Kardashian West's case, a peachy red tone is what cancels out her dark circles. “You just dab it anywhere that you're dark,” Kardashian West explained, adding that her makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic often applies it around her lower lips as well, as shadows can also occur there.

What colour concealer is best for dark circles?

“For dark circles and shadowing, a pink, peach or red-toned colour corrector will take away any darkness and allow your under eyes to look bright and awake.” For pale skin tones, opt for a creamy peach shade. For darker skin tones, look for formulas with more red and orange hues.
