How to make peanut butter ice cream topping

There's always that favorite restaurant meal or amazing dessert that always keeps us wanting to go back for more. While it is certainly a treat to go to these spots and order up our tried and true dishes, there are times it would be really fun and convenient to enjoy them right at home. For this very purpose, Susan Olayinka, recipe developer at The Flexible Fridge, created this delicious peanut butter ice cream sauce for anyone who's craving the original topping from Friendly's. As a true peanut butter lover, Olayinka says, "I literally eat it by the spoon," and many of us would. So get excited, because Olayinka was tested out a copycat recipe, and it is not only yummy — it's spot-on.

About the process, Olayinka remarks, "[There was] so much trial and error and adaption but I finally got it!" She achieved the perfect balance of texture and flavor. It only takes 15 minutes to whip up, which we bet is a shorter amount of time than driving to the closest Friendly's and ordering the dessert. Aside from being quick and easy, you'll have a peanut butter sauce to smother and enjoy on your ice cream any day of the week. Nothing makes vanilla ice cream taste better than the satisfying combination of salty and sweet. You'll also be able to experiment by using this sauce as a topping for the rest the contents in your pantry and fridge — did anyone say waffles with peanut butter sauce?

Would you like something totally delicious?! Then try this Peanut Butter Sauce for Ice Cream. It has to be the easiest ice cream topping out there because it uses pantry basics I bet you already have sitting in your pantry as we speak?

It's a cross between a peanut butter sauce and a caramel sauce, and when drizzled over some rich, chocolate ice cream the results are out-of-this-world!

Step#1: Add Water and Sugar

You'll simmer the water and sugar in a saucepot with a high profile until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is clear.

Step#2: Add the Peanut Butter

Make sure your peanut butter is pure peanut butter without a ton of other ingredients in it! It should only have Peanuts and or Salt listed as ingredients.

Otherwise, it might affect its ability to work correctly in this recipe. The heat from the sugar water will easily melt the peanut butter when you whisk it in. For a chunkier sauce use chunky peanut butter!

Step#3: Heat Until Syrupy!

Continue to whisk the sauce on medium-high. It will bubble and rise up like a witch's brew! (This is why you want a high-profile pot so it doesn't boil over). This is the sugar water caramelizing and you want to make sure you give it enough time to work its magic.

It could take 5-10 minutes. Continue to whisk constantly and don't walk away from it! Otherwise, it will scorch and burn.

Step#4: Check for Consistency

Once your sauce reaches a thick consistency where it will coat the back of a spoon and drizzle, it's ready! Serve at warm to room temperature. Otherwise, the hot caramel aspect of this sauce will melt the ice cream too quickly!

How do you make peanut butter liquidy?

When using peanut butter only, the key is heat. Peanut butter is naturally high in fat, but that fat is nearly solid at room temperature. In order to soften it up, you need some heat. In my case, I heated two tablespoons in a heat-proof bowl and then stirred like crazy.
