How to Program a LiftMaster Garage Door Opener Keypad

Programming your new keypad will depend on the model of keypad you have. Use these instructions based on your model.

LiftMaster 877Max

  1. Press and hold the * and # buttons on the keypad until the lights stop flashing.
  2. Enter the four-digit PIN code you want to program.
  3. Press the # button.
  4. Press and release the Enter button up to four times depending on the type of opener you have: one press for Security+ 2.0 (has a yellow “Learn” button), two presses for 315 MHz Security+ (purple “Learn” button), three presses for 390 MHz Security+ (red/orange “Learn” button), or four presses for 390 MHz Billion Code (green “Learn” button).
  5. Press 0 to exit programming mode.
  6. Press and release the “Learn” button on the garage door opener.
  7. Enter your four-digit PIN and then press and release the Enter button multiple times until you hear two clicks from your opener or you see its lights flash. The programming is complete.

LiftMaster 877LM

There are two ways to program this keypad depending on whether your opener has a “Learn” button or a multi-functional door control. If it has a “Learn” button, follow these steps:

  1. Press and release the “Learn” button on the opener and you’ll see an LED light up for 30 seconds.
  2. Within that 30 seconds, enter the four-digit PIN you want to program on your keypad. Then, press and hold the “Enter” button on the keypad until the lights flash on your opener. Your programming is now complete.

If your opener has a multi-function door control, use these steps instead:

  1. Press the “Learn” button on the door control.
  2. Press the same button again and the LED next to it will flash once.
  3. Enter the four-digit PIN you choose on your keypad.
  4. Press and hold the “Enter” button on your keypad until the lights flash on your opener.

LiftMaster 387LM and 387LMC

For these remotes, you first need to find out which type of garage door opener you have and follow the instructions for your type:

  • Type 1: Chamberlain, Sears Craftsman, LiftMaster, Master Mechanic, or Do It opener with three-position DIP switches.
  1. Determine your opener ID: ID 11 has 9 switches and is from the US, ID 12 has 9 switches and is from Canada, ID 15 has 8 switches, and ID 19 has 7 switches.
  2. Write down the DIP switch sequence: each switch will be in the + position (top), the 0 position (middle), or the – position (bottom).
  3. On your keypad, press and hold the * and # buttons until the lights stop flashing.
  4. Enter a four-digit PIN of your choosing, then press #.
  5. Enter your ID number from above, then press #.
  6. Enter your DIP switch sequence from above, then press #. Your programming is now complete.
  • Type 2: Genie, Linear, or Moore-o-Matic openers with two-position DIP switches.
  1. Determine your opener ID: ID 13 is a Genie opener with 12 switches, ID 14 is a Linear opener with 10 switches, ID 16 is a Stanley opener with 10 switches, ID 17 is a Genie opener with 9 switches, ID 18 is a Linear or Moore-o-Matic opener with 8 switches.
  2. Record your DIP switch sequence: use a 1 for each switch that is up and a 2 for each switch that is down.
  3. On your keypad, press and hold the * and # buttons until the lights stop flashing.
  4. Enter a four-digit PIN of your choosing, then press #.
  5. Enter your ID number from above, then press #.
  6. Enter your DIP switch sequence from above, then press #. Your programming is now complete.
  • Type 3: Chamberlain, Sears Craftsman, LiftMaster, Master Mechanic, or Do It openers with yellow, white, or gray “Smart/Learn” buttons.
  1. Write down the DIP switch sequence: each switch will be in the + position (top), the 0 position (middle), or the – position (bottom).
  2. On your keypad, press and hold the * and # buttons until the lights stop flashing.
  3. Enter a four-digit PIN of your choosing, then press #.
  4. Enter 11, then #.
  5. Enter your DIP switch sequence from above, then press #.
  6. Press and release the Smart/Learn button on the opener.
  7. Enter your four-digit PIN and then press 0. Your programming is now complete.
  • Type 4: Chamberlain, Sears Craftsman, LiftMaster, Master Mechanic, Do It, Genie Intellicode, Overhead Door, Stanley, Wayne Dalton, or Linear openers with a Smart/Learn button.
  1. Determine your opener ID number:

a. ID 1 includes Linear openers

b. ID 2 includes Chamberlain, Sears Craftsman, LiftMaster, Master Mechanic, and Do It openers with an orange button

c. ID 3 includes Chamberlain, Sears Craftsman, LiftMaster, Master Mechanic, and Do It openers with a purple button

d. ID 4 includes Chamberlain, Sears Craftsman, LiftMaster, Master Mechanic, and Do It openers with a green button

e. ID 5 includes 315 MHz Genie Intellicode or Overhead Door openers

f. ID 6 includes 390 MHz Genie Intellicode or Overhead Door openers

g. ID 7 includes all Stanley openers

h. ID 8 includes Chamberlain, Sears Craftsman, LiftMaster, Master Mechanic, and Do It openers with a yellow button

i. ID 9 includes all Wayne Dalton openers

  1. On your keypad, press and hold the * and # buttons until the lights stop flashing.
  2. Enter a four-digit PIN of your choosing, then press #.
  3. Enter your ID number from above, then press #.
  4. Press and release the Smart/Learn button on the opener.
  5. Enter your four-digit PIN and press 0. For Genie and Overhead Door openers, press 0 twice. Your programming is complete.
