Hp color laserjet pro mfp m283fdw double sided scanning

I have an iMac running MacOS Catalina 10.15.7 and an HP Laser Jet Pro MFP M283cdw. Is there any way to do actual, start it and walk away, duplex scanning? I can't do it from the Printer/Scanner menu in System Preferences. I can't do it from HP Smart. From HP Easy Scan, I have to use a lame process of scanning one side, turning the paper over, and scanning the other side. Even then, it seems to make each page a separate file.

Surely there must be some way to do actual duplex scanning, and some way to create one file out of a multi-page document. I had a $69 Cannon All In One printer that did both, and an application that made it simple and intuitive to do both.

Help, please.

Is this printer able to do auto-duplex scanning and printing?

The hardware itself will not duplex scan but the Easy Scan software that comes free with this printer gives you the option of doing a manual duplex scan where you put the pages into the ADF and when the stack is done scanning, you put them back in again upside down. The software automatically sets the pages into the correct order. I think this is a better deal than spending an additional $150 on the M477fdw.

As mentioned, it does not auto-duplex scan (double sided scan). The auto feeder scans one side only on a pass. I have not found a way around this (other than running the fronts and back through separately and recombining in a PDF, which is annoying), so I just use another MFP for this task. I was surprised the printer could not do this, as every MFP unit I have bought since around 2009 has had this capability built-in (even much less expensive ones), I didn't realize it wasn't basically standard these days (especially with all the talk of conserving paper and pushes for printing doubled sided). For duplex scanning, you'll want the M477fdw. This is the one and only feature that I wish my M277dw (the predecessor to this model) had but doesn't.

It does auto-duplex printing, but not duplex scanning.
