Troy Donahue, a blond, blue-eyed film heartthrob of the 1950's and 60's, died here today. He was 65 and lived in Santa Monica, Calif.

The cause was a heart attack, said a family friend, Bob Palmer.

Mr. Donahue played Sandra Dee's young lover in ''A Summer Place'' in 1959, a role that made him a matinee star.

He went on to star in a series of teenage romances, including ''Parrish'' (1961), ''Rome Adventure'' (1962) and ''Palm Springs Weekend'' (1963).

Mr. Donahue was born Merle Johnson Jr. on Jan. 27, 1936, in New York, according to a Warner Brothers studio biography from 1960. His father headed the motion picture division of General Motors, and his mother was an aspiring actress.

Mr. Donahue moved to Hollywood when he was 19 and was discovered by Warner Brothers. His professional name was given to him by Henry Willson, the same film agent who named Rock Hudson.

The release of ''A Summer Place'' made Mr. Donahue for a time the studio's top fan-mail draw. ''They'd ask me to light a cigarette, and when I did, they screamed and fell down,'' Mr. Donahue said of his fans in an interview a year after the film's release.

During his heyday Mr. Donahue split his time between the movies and television, appearing in the ABC detective series ''Surfside Six.'' By the late 1960's the studios stopped making the kind of youth-oriented films that propelled Mr. Donahue to stardom. He had a bit part in ''The Godfather, Part 2'' in 1974, playing a character called Merle Johnson. But with his career in decline, Mr. Donahue began abusing drugs and alcohol; back in New York, he even spent a summer homeless in Central Park. By the early 1980's, he had returned to sobriety.

''I realized that I was going to die, and I was dying -- or worse than that, I might live the way I was living for the rest of my life,'' Mr. Donahue said at the time.

He had had bit parts since then, including in John Waters's 1990 film, ''Cry-Baby.''

Mr. Donahue was married at least four times, including to the actress Suzanne Pleshette.

He is survived by a sister and two children. At the time of his death he lived with his fiancée, the mezzo-soprano Zheng Cao, Mr. Palmer said.

Trevor Patrick Donahue, of Philadelphia, age 24 passed away surrounded by his loving family on October 2, 2018. Trevor was preceded in death by his Pop-Pop Edward Donahue. Also surviving are many aunts uncles and cousins.

When we remember and think of Trevor, the highlights of his life are his love of Carol and his son Trevor Patrick Jr., hockey and skateboarding. One of his favorite things was going to Wildwood and eating Mack's pizza. His favorite sports teams were the Flyers, Eagles and Notre Dame but most of all he loved his family and friends.
