Ivy league track and field championships 2022

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard track and field will compete at the 2022 Ivy League Outdoor Heptagonal Championships this weekend (May 7-8) at the Dewitt Cuyler Athletic Complex in New Haven, CT, the first Ivy Outdoor Heps meet since 2019.

Competition will begin on Saturday at 11 a.m., with finals in several field events: hammer throw, pole vault, long jump, and javelin throw. Running event trials will begin at 1 p.m. and run until 4:25 p.m. Finals in the men's and women's 10,000 meters will begin at 8 and 8:40 p.m., respectively. The men's heptathlon will also begin on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.

At the Ivy League Indoor Heptagonal Championships in February, the Harvard women's team won a conference title for the first time since 2017, while the men's team placed second.

Harvard has seen six school records fall so far in the spring season and will look to carry that momentum into one of the biggest meets of the outdoor season.

What to Know
-Last weekend, Harvard split into three small groups at the Penn Relays, the Payton Jordan Invitational (Stanford) and the Skyhawk Invitational (Stonehill).

  - At Stanford, sophomore Acer Iverson shattered the school and Ivy record in the 5000m, placing third among collegiate runners (7th overall) in 13:28.54. That time beat Ian Carswell 's ('97) 26-year old school mark (13:43.78) by over 15 seconds, and Dartmouth standout Jim Sapienza's Ivy League record (13:30.79) that stood since 1985.

  - In addition, senior Matthew Pereira shattered Iverson's school record in the 10,000m (28:24.56, set earlier this spring) and set a new Ivy record, finishing fifth in 27:45.77. That time is second fastest in the NCAA East region this season, and broke Tom McArdle's (Dartmouth) Ivy mark of 28:18.21 set in 2002.

  - At the Penn Relays last Friday, junior Sarah Omoregie won the college women's shotput on her fifth effort of the day (15.57m, 51'1"), marking her third individual win in the event this spring.

  - At the Skyhawk Invitational last Saturday, Harvard picked up several event victories. Sophomore Julius Ewungkem won the men's long jump with a personal best effort of 6.74m (22'1.35"). Junior Alana Carroll won the pole vault, clearing 3.80m (12'5.5"). First-year Christina DeMeo set a new personal best in the 3000m steeplechase, winning the event in 11:36.71. Senior Charles Lego won the 400m hurdles in 54.5. Junior Luke Laverdiere won the 1500m in his spring debut in the event, placing first in 3:57.36, and Junior Riley McDermott set a collegiate best in the 800m with a winning time of 1:54.32.
