Internet options This is an applet that is part of the program Internet Explorer.

It is used for configuration of IE, but other browsers we would generally just refer to their settings.

Privacy This tab is used to control the websites’ use of cookies. A cookie is a text file used to store session data. Can also be used to configure the Pop-up Blocker.

Programs This tab is used to manage add-ons, internet programs, and the default web browser.

Advanced For settings that do not fit under other tabs, this tab contains the functionality for: disabling certain types of content, enabling a script debugger, enabling/disabling passive FTP,

Allows/preventing active content from running on local computer drives. This tab can be used to reset the browser.

Resolution This is a term to describe the number of pixels on a display.

Color Depth The lower the color depth, the lower the amount of colors are available. E.g. 2^6 rgb color variations is less than 2^10 color variations.

Refresh rate This refers to how often a screen can change or update completely.

User accounts Usually users will fall under “groups” in an enterprise domain. Under the consumer umbrella, user accounts can/may act as supervisory accounts on the machine they occupy.

These accounts may have different levels of permissions and rights in order to correspond to the functions of the computer programs that are being run on the machine.

These data can be altered through a User accounts applet or configuration menu.

Folder options Serves as an applet in Control Panel and typically governs how Explorer shows folders and files.

Enabled/disabld in Windows Explorer, can view Hidden files Users may want to see hidden files or files not shown unless told to be shown. These files may appear as more transparent than that of a regular folder or file.

General options On the general options tab, configuration changes can be made to browse folder, click items with certain counts, and adjust navigation pane.

View options In the view options tab, you can toggle what can or can’t be seen without going through the folder options

Remote settings There is a remote settings tab that enables(disables) connections to the local PC from another PC on the network. Windows has some notable remote access tools.

Remote Desktop allows a remote user access to their desktop machine. This would run on TCP port 3389.

There is also Remote Assistance which allows a user to ask for help from co-workers or from technicians. Remote assistance takes up an ephemeral port (ranging from 49152 to 65535). This is more a local support fix.

System protection The system protection tab provides the options for system restore and undoing unwanted system changes

Windows Firewall This is bundled software firewall for the Windows PC User.

Power Options Windows needs a way of controlling or selectively reducing power to hardware components. Power management allows Windows to perform control of Hardware, Firmware, and Operating System power functions.

• Power Options >- Hibernate

Hibernate Also known as Suspend to Disk, this saves any data in memory (open files) to disk (as a .sys file in the root) then powers the computer off. Referred to as ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) mode 54.

Power plans These are settings that can be configured and depend on the situation to dictate the outcome of the power setting. If the device isn’t plugged in, the computer may perform a different function than that of a device that is plugged in.

• Power Options> - Sleep/suspend

Sleep/suspend If a device is suspended, the memory is either written to the root or to memory.

Depending on the type of ACPI mode, the device will either power every component off or it will cut most components power off.

• Power Options>- Standby

Standby Also known as Suspend to RAM, cuts power to most devices but maintains power to the memory. ACPI modes 51-53.

Credential Manager Another way of using Single Sign On, using a credential manager allows network accounts using the Control Panel app Credential Manager a way of authenticating or rather caching passwords for websites. Stored in PLAIN text

Programs and features Located in the Control Panel, windows install local applications to the program files directory on the boot partition. This feature/app allows you to uninstall a program, add or remove features, or make repairs on programs as necessary.

Homegroup A feature, introduced in Windows 7, to simplify shared access on a home network.

Devices and Printers This is the location for the basic user-configurable settings for peripheral devices attached to the computer. We can manage most external devices and printers from this location.

Sound In Control Panel/Settings, you can make changes via the Sound applet for microphones and other inputs.

• Network and Sharing Center

Network and Sharing Center Used to provide an overview of network availability and configuration. If there is a networking issue, this is the main place to start with assessing network connectivity and troubleshooting.

Device Manager This applet allows you to edit and view the hardware installed on the device.

BitLocker • Full volume encryption feature included with Microsoft Windows versions starting with Windows Vista • Microsoft recommends all drives are bitlocked

Sync Center This is an applet that allows the user to sync files when online. Any changes that are made are synchronized when the network connection is established.
