LANCASTER, Pa. — Amid an abundance of young plants, novice and experienced gardeners will all get inspiration from the speakers coming to Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum’s annual Herb & Garden Faire, to be held Saturday, May 9, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. “Aside from shopping for plants at the Herb Faire, this is a great opportunity to get free gardening advice from the experts, not just from the vendors, but also by attending the talks that are given each day,” said Cindy Kirby-Reedy, coordinator of the event. At 11 a.m. on Saturday, landscape designer and popular Landis Valley speaker Bob Goodhart will present his case for going organic in the home garden, covering soil organisms, garden preparation, fertilization and mulching with strong emphasis on doing it all organically while saving money. At 1 p.m., You Bet Your Garden radio show host Mike McGrath returns to Landis Valley to talk about attracting beneficial insects, birds, and toads to the garden to pollinate and protect plants. At 3 p.m., McGrath will focus on tomatoes, with tips and tricks to growing large and tasty fruits, even in containers. The speakers will join over 80 vendors of both common and hard-to-find plants (including many heirloom varieties), garden art, garden-inspired products, and food. Visitors are invited to stroll through the Heirloom Seed Project gardens, which produce most of their seeds, as well. More information can be found on the event website, www.landisvalleyherbfaire.org. The Herb and Garden Faire is the main fundraiser for the Heirloom Seed Project, which started in 1985 with the purpose of preserving historically significant vegetable, herb and ornamental seeds. Some of the plants featured at the faire date back to the early nineteenth century. Seed varieties not offered as potted plants, such as beans and corn, can be purchased at the Landis Valley Museum Store. Admission is $10 per person aged 6 and up. Kids ages 5 and under are free.
