This weekend, there will be many opportunities to remember and honor service members who have died while serving their country.

Memorial Day ceremonies around Wake, Durham, Orange and Johnston counties on Monday will allow visitors to “thank veterans and the power of communication for moving us forward, our souls and hopes intact,” according to an Orange County Memorial Day announcement.

Memorial Day ceremony at State Capitol

A Memorial Day ceremony will be held in Raleigh at the Capitol on Monday, May 30 from 11 a.m. to 12 noon.

It will be hosted by the Tar Heel Detachment #733 of the Marine Corps League and the Memorial Day Ceremony Committee. The speakers at the event will include a retired US Marine as the special guest speaker.

Historic Oakwood Cemetery ceremony

The Historic Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh will hold a ceremony of tribute on Memorial Day for the first time in three years due to the pandemic.

The ceremony is Monday from 4 p.m to 4:45 p.m. at the Veterans’ Field of Honor within the Historic Oakwood Cemetery located at 701 Oakwood Ave.

The keynote speaker will be Maj. Robert W. Tuttle of the U.S. Army Special Forces with a musical performance by the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing Band.

Continuing the annual tradition, there will be a ceremonial placing of the memorial wreath. historicoakwoodcemetery.org

Cary Memorial Day Remembrance

A Memorial Day remembrance event will be held at Veterans Freedom Park, 1517 N. Harrison Ave. in Cary at 2:30 p.m.

Council member Jack Smith will emcee the event, which will feature remarks from Cary Town Council members and speakers from local veteran organizations.

The keynote speaker will be Gunnery Sgt. Jeffrey Sherman, whoserved in the Marine Corps for 23 years. He was deployed to Afghanistan as a communications chief as part of the 10th Mountain Division Aviation Brigade.

The Cary Town Band will perform.

Limited seating is available and attendees are welcome to bring chairs. Free parking will be available at Cary Academy at 1500 N. Harrison Ave., across the street from the park. townofcary.org
