Newell in 1895. It was composed while he was working for the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. He had been called to work at Moody Institute by Dwight Moody himself to work as Assistant Superintendent under R. A Torrey. He says the words of this hymn came to him while on his way to teach a class at the Institute. He immediately found an empty class and jotted down the words of the hymn on the back of the envelope. He wrote many other hymns such as “I sing of the love of my father”, “O sinner, come list to the voice” and “As God’s right hand my Savior stands”. William Reed Newell was born on 22 May 1868 in Savannah Ohio. He was a well-known Princeton and Orbelin trained bible theologian of his age and many flocked to hear his city-wide bible classes. He is the author of popular commentaries such as Romans Verse by Verse, The Book of Revelation and Hebrews Verse-by-Verse.
