A Pomeranian is a direct descent of spitz-type dogs that were known to be sled dogs in Iceland and Lapland. Its name was coined from its origin, Pomerania, where they were developed. Just like with other popular breeds, the Pomeranian gained its popularity because of royal families. Not only were they popular with them, but known historical figures such as Martin Luther King, Isaac Newton, Mozart, and Michaelangelo owned their own Poms as well. Pomeranian is lively, independent, and cuddly that tends to act as if they’re big dogs (despite being tiny!). Pomeranians are easy to take care of and do not require a lot of fussing or pampering. They are the ideal pet indoors. They don’t take up a lot of space and are active pups that don’t mind playing inside or outside the house. When it comes to grooming their mane, it’s easy to groom and maintain. Their coat needs frequent brushing weekly to avoid tangles, matting,  and shedding. Like with other dogs, they require regular bathing and are brought to the grooming salons every few months to trim and shape their coat. Make it a regular habit to check their eyes (for possible tear tracks), brush their teeth, and clip their nails.

A Pom has a tendency to bark a lot, especially when it comes to strangers or other dogs, so early socialization and training must be utilized. When training them, it could be difficult to do so because of their short attention span, so make each session short and fun. When it comes to housebreaking training, be sure to be patient, consistent, and use positive reinforcement. Because of their short legs, they don’t require vigorous exercise and are content with long walks or jogging alongside you, with the stamina to match.

The average lifespan of a Pomeranian lasts from 12 to 16 years.
