The R56 MINI Cooper S is prone to excessive oil vapor within the intake system from the crankcase breather system.

This can cause a build up of oil residue on the intake valves as well as moisture and oil in the intake air ducts.

A catch can separates the oil vapors from the crankcase air before it is returned back into the intake system, keeping your intercooler and sensors working at peak performance. If you've ever taken off your intercooler, you most likely noticed a build up of oil within each rubber boot sealing each end of the intercooler. Spray some cleaner into it and you'll quickly discover massive amounts of oil that build up inside the intercooler. This oil coating is not in itself harmful to the general operation of the engine, but it does affect the performance by limiting the efficiency of the intercooler in cooling the compressed intake charge, not to mention gumming up various sensors and components including the critical intake valves.

Keep in mind that when your car was serviced before, parts may have been replaced with different size fasteners used in the replacement. The sizes of the nuts and bolts we give may be different from what you have, so be prepared with different size sockets and wrenches.

Protect your eyes, hands and body from fluids, dust and debris while working on your vehicle. If you're working with the electrical system, disconnect the battery before beginning. Always catch fluids in appropriate containers and properly dispose of any fluid waste. Recycle parts, packaging and fluids when possible. Work with a cool engine

NM Engineering Catch Tank is machined from billet 6061 aluminum alloy and anodized for stealth and added surface durability. The NM tank catches the oil and moisture in the blow-by gas that can cause carbon and sludge build-up in the turbo, intake system and the engine. Every piece of the kit can be disassembled for thorough cleaning and servicing.

The NM Engineering Catch Tank kit also features the Patent Pending Locking Clip system for securing the billet adapters to the OEM plastic fittings. It allows installer to simply slip the adapter onto the OE fitting and the clip will snap in place keeping the adapter from backing out.

The kit includes block-off plug for the rear PCV port.

Not-So-Fun Fact:
MINI dealer service charges 5-6 hours ($600-700) to clean your intake port from carbon build-up caused by the oil/moisture circulating back into the internal. This procedure is 'recommended' around 60-70,000 miles, after your warranty expires.

  • Eliminate intake tract oil contamination, carbon build-up and intave valve damage.
  • Prevent pre-mature sensor failure
  • Keep engine performance at peak levels
  • Construction - Bright Black anodized billet aluminum, Stainless steel bracket

The M7 Oil Catch Can is not only functional is a work of automotive performance ART! It is CNC machined from billet aluminum and adds a sharp look to your engine compartment.

Why install a M7 oil catch can you ask? With the M7 Oil Catch Can, your MINI Cooper's engine will be protected from excessive oil and hydrocarbon buildup which leads to performance-hindering oil film and sludge along your intake tract, on your engine control sensors and on your engine's intake valves.  Because the 2007 & up MINI is direct injection, the intake valves do not get cleaned of oil residue form the gasoline mixture which in previous engines was ahead of the valve.  Now, all the oil blow-by burns onto the intake valves and builds up.  The end result is loss of power and a very expensive repair bill. This oil film and sludge can appear in other critical places throughout the engine -- such as the intercooler -- where clean surfaces are critical for maximized heat transfer and on your MAF sensor (Mass Air Flow) where the film will cause the sensor to send a false signal to your ECU killing performance. By capturing excess oil vapor and particles, the M7 Oil Catch Can ensures that oil film and sludge will not become a factor in your vehicle's performance. If you don't think your engine is pumping oil back through your intake system, remove the breather tube and look at all the oil!.  The breather tube connects directly to your intake hose and directs this oily mess back through your engine to be burned.

All hoses, brackets, clamps, necessary fittings and detailed easy to follow step-by-step instructions are included, including an oil drain plug and an easy to view sight tube. The sight tube lets you know the amount of oil in the can. The hoses are high quality "Made in the USA" automotive grade, designed to withstand the rigors of the under-hood environment and to not degrade when exposed to oil. Beware of other "low cost" catch can systems that use silicone hoses, because oil and silicone are not compatible. Silicone hoses will eventually deteriorate and make an absolute mess of your engine compartment.

M7 Catch Can Is Required for R60 Engines!!

After spending literally thousands of dollars at the MINI service center and a local shop trying to diagnose hesitancy/jerking during acceleration, it was determined that "carbon buildup on the valves" was causing all the issues. That's when I found the M7 Oil Catch Can and installed in the breather system.

Since installing the M7 product, I haven't had one issue and the 2011 Countryman S continues to drive like it was designed to. Last weekend I emptied nearly 14 oz. of watery sludge the M7 catch can had pulled from the airflow after only 10,000 miles. I would post a picture if I could and you would be amazed on the amount of crap that didn't go into the motor. I didn't expect this amount - and probably should be emptying every 5,000 miles from now on. I can only imagine all the issues this would have created (or re-created) flowing into the R60 engine.

The airflow dynamics is a known issue with the R60 version, and for $200 this is a 100% solution so far. I highly recommend this product. Great design, well made and even looks pretty good.

This is clearly a well built high quality product.

I had no trouble fitting it to my Countryman. The fact it has a dipstick is a really great idea and it takes a couple of seconds to check if it's time to empty it.

A couple of minor improvements for future versions.
The instructions could be a little clearer as they say things like "Connect to OCC Inlet"...except no where do they indicate which is the inlet and which is the outlet.

I personally would prefer if the hoses could route near the air cleaner instead of over the turbo.

At least in the Turbo MINIs it's hard to hold the nut for the mount, and I had to take the headlight out to get at it. What I ended up doing is put a nut on both sides (turning it into a stud) then used a wing nut so you can easily remove the mount to empty the can.

These are minor issues though.
Recommended!

Also at least

Excellent quality product as usual! Straight forward install once you figure out where the instructions advise mounting the can. The included photos were a bit too close up. A pic of the entire engine bay with a fully installed can would have saved time locating the proper area to install the catch can as my JCW model was different.

Can oil catch cans cause problems?

Can Oil Catch Can Cause Problems? Besides engine failure, which is the most common problem caused by catch cans, another issue is that most generic catch cans may not provide sufficient oil filtering. Fitting one of these devices to a vehicle will not influence the engine's crankcase vapors being filtered.

Is an oil catch can Necessary?

Is it necessary? Strictly speaking, any car can continue to run without an oil catch can. However, if you do not install one, you have to take other steps to deal with the effects of blowby in your vehicle. One is the removal of the manifold in the DFI engine so the deposits can be cleaned off.

Do oil catch cans make a difference?

Oil catch work by capturing harmful particles from engine blow-by. However, research has shown that aftermarket catch cans lack the efficiency of OEM counterparts. With so much variation in the development of aftermarket parts, it is hard to tell an effective oil catch can from an ineffective one.

Do oil catch cans increase horsepower?

An oil catch can doesn't add any power or make any cool noises so it is often overlooked when modifying vehicles. However, a catch can will ensure you always have a cleaner intake tract free of oil, and help keep your engine running better for longer.
