The gathering will be the old Peck Spring parking lot on Whiting Street. All marchers should be at their gathering area by 8:30am.
PLAINVILLE – The town’s traditional Memorial Day parade and ceremony will return this year.
“Everything will be back the same way it was before the pandemic,” said Dave Dudek, chair of the Memorial Day Parade. “The only reason the parade will not happen is if there is a lightning storm; otherwise it will happen rain or shine. We’ve usually had a good turnout in the past. A lot of people are telling me that they’re looking to go out and do something, especially since the Balloon Festival was canceled. ”
Dudek added that town organizations, including the police and fire departments, middle school and high school students and the Navy Sea Cadets will be marching in the parade this year.
This year’s parade Grand Marshal is Frank Robinson. The Junior Grand Marshal will be Michael Ahern.
The parade will step off at 9 a.m. from the intersection of Whiting and Broad streets in Plainville. It will then head west on Broad Street, then north on Washington Street. From there, it will turn right and move east on West Main Street. The parade will continue down West Main though the center of town and then turn south on Crown Street. At Maple Street, the parade will turn onto Whiting Street and then turn left. The parade marchers are asked not to break-up until they have passed the Post Office on Whiting Street.
Immediately after the parade, a Memorial Day ceremony will be held in Veterans Memorial Park. The ceremony will include a performance from the Plainville High School band and choral group.
“There will be readings of ‘What Memorial Day means to me’ by winners of the essay contest from each elementary school,” said Dudek. “There will then be wreath placements at each memorial, followed by a rifle volley and the playing of Taps.”
Prior to the parade, at 6:30 a.m., The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 574 and American Legion Post 33 will meet at the VFW on Northwest Dr, in Plainville to begin the honoring of deceased Veterans.
“From the VFW, the group will proceed to St. Josephs cemetery on route 10, then to West Cemetery on route 177,” said Dudek. “The final cemetery being visited will be the East Street Cemetery on route 10. At each location there will be readings, a wreath laying, rifle volley and Taps.”
Dudek said that flags will also be placed upon the graves of deceased veterans, honoring those who served and those who made the ultimate sacrifice. This, he said, is the true meaning of Memorial Day.
