Columbus born Food Network star Guy Fieri has eaten his way through our fair city several times. His show, Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives (DDD), features different local restaurants that are cooking up specialty dishes in cities across the country. Fieri first appeared on our television screens back in 2006 when he was a contestant on The Next Food Network Star. He may have come in second, but I think we can all agree that he certainly became a star. There are six restaurants here in Columbus that have hosted Fieri in the past couple of years, a very respectable total given all the Ohio DDD locations which have been highlighted over the years. Those are some pretty remarkable recommendations if you ask me. Flavors and fresh ingredients combine to create incredibly satisfying, American style cuisine. Sweet Carrot unfortunately closed back in October 2021, but they remain open for catering. “Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives,” often shortened to “Triple D,” is one of the Food Network’s most successful shows, and it’s easy to see why. Guy Fieri is a skilled chef with an appetite almost as big as his personality, which makes watching him travel nationwide to eat the best food in each state a blast. He’s been across the states and even to other countries in search of the top restaurants and never fails to find iconic spots with top-tier cuisine. Krazy Jim’s Blimpy Burger304 S Ashley St., Ann Arbor, MI Season 2 Episode 12 was all about burgers, rings, and fries – and there’s no better stop in Michigan for that than Krazy Jim’s Blimpy Burger in Ann Arbor. On the episode, Guy’s burger was stacked high with onions, peppers, bacon, salami, and mushrooms, a combination of flavors he called “the festival of funk.” These burgers are unbelievably good but you have to order right and in the right order.

MI Immediately following Supino’s spotlight, Polish Village Cafe was visited on Episode 13 of Season 12. This spot nestled among the strong Polish roots of Hamtramck is the place to go in Metro-Detroit for some traditional eastern European cooking. Hungarian pancakes, Polish pierogi, and plenty of meats, including schnitzel and kielbasa, are just a few of the classic beloved menu items. Must-Try: The Dill Pickle Soup. Detroit, MI Featured on the premiere episode of Season 13, Traffic Jam and Snug became a hit among Detroiters. Their seasonal menu, local produce, and made-in-house meals have made them a premier fresh-food destination in the city. Don’t forget to try one of their decadent desserts as well! Must Try: The Berlin Doner. This sandwich has roasted and shaved spice lamb topped with cabbage, cucumber, tomato, and onion salad with creamy yogurt dressing on a traditional Turkish bun. Clarkston Union Bar & Kitchen54 S Main St., Village of Clarkston, MI Kid Rock joined Guy Fieri on a tour around Detroit on Episode 3 of Season 13. Owner Curt Catallo transformed an old church into what is now known to be one of the best comfort food diners in the state with plenty of mac and cheese and sandwiches. Grab a beer and a sandwich of your choice, from comforting grilled cheese to the classic Reuben and see what makes this spot so charming. Must-Try: Mac and Cheese. This joint serves up mac and cheese three ways, including a lobster mac and a portobello mushroom gratin. Union Woodshop18 S Main St., Village of Clarkston, MI Another destination on Guy Fieri and Kid Rock’s exploration of Detroit food on Episode 3; Season 13, the Union Woodshop made a lasting impression. A sister restaurant to Clarkston Union Bar & Kitchen, the Woodshop specialized in slow-smoked BBQ, wood-fired pizza, and plenty of craft beer. The rustic yet hip environment draws crowds to the space to share a drink over scrumptious food. Must-Try: The Porker. This dish made with ground pork, Michigan maple bacon, and hotlinks (all made and prepared in-house), really rocked Guy’s world, so we’re sure it’ll rock yours too. The Fly Trap22950 Woodward Ave., Ferndale, MI Season 2, Episode 11 brought The Fly Trap in Ferndale some attention. This compact and colorful “finer diner” offers a lot of the favorite fare but with a global twist that makes them stand out. In this episode, Guy Fieri praised the Pho Bowls, but there’s more where that came from, including Thai-style peanut chicken, a salmon burger, and even housemade hot sauce and jam. Must Try: Gingerbread Waffles. Make your breakfast sweet with a bit of spice, served with sautéed apples, cherries, and cinnamon syrup. Diners Drive Ins and Dives in the Lansing AreaJoe’s Gizzard City120 W Main St. Potterville, MI One of Guy’s earliest stops on “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives” was Joe’s Gizzard City in Potterville on Episode 3 of Season 2. Just as you’d expect, Joe’s Gizzard City is known for deep-fried chicken gizzards. If gizzards don’t sound appetizing, there is a whole other menu of deep-fried deliciousness, including chicken dinners (gizzards excluded), onion rings, and even desserts. Meat Southern BBQ & Carnivore Cuisine1224 Turner Rd., Lansing, MI In the fourth episode of its 27th season, “Triple D” took to Lansing to highlight Meat Southern BBQ & Carnivore Cuisine, a southern-style barbecue joint known for house-smoked pork belly and pickle fries that Guy described as “another level of ridiculous.” Get ready for hefty portions of eclectic meat-and-potatoes dishes exploding with bold southern flavors in Michigan’s capital city. Capital City BBQ1026 W Saginaw St., Lansing, MI Featured on Episode 5 of Season 27, Capital City BBQ is serving up inventive and delicious BBQ goodness with a Vietnamese twist. With a split menu offering Vietnamese dishes like pho and spring rolls on one side and barbecue classics like baby back ribs and brisket on the other. The blend of these two flavors is unlike anything anywhere else in the state and makes Capital City BBQ well worth a visit. Must-Try: Brisket Banh Mi. Tender smoked brisket topped with classic banh mi toppings like pickled daikon, cucumber, and cilantro. Zaytoon Mediterranean940 Elmwood Rd., Lansing, MI Southeast Michigan is known for fantastic Mediterranean food, but you can also find these fantastic flavors in Lansing at Zaytoon Mediterranean restaurant, as shown on season 27 episode 5 of “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.” Zaytoon offers a whole menu full of delicious food, including combos with both mixed-diet and vegetarian options. Dine on classic chicken shawarma with garlic sauce or order some falafel for a meat-free snack. Must Try: Lamb grape leaves with a side of creamy hummus. Eastside Fish Fry and Grill Eastside Fish Fry & Grill2417 E Kalamazoo St., Lansing, MI On Season 27; Episode 7, Guy Fieri returned to Lansing to try Eastside Fish Fry & Grill. Of course, fresh seafood is a staple of their menu; try classic fish fry favorites like tilapia and catfish or snazzier fish like red snapper. Otherwise dive into local Michigan flavor with walleye or lake perch. Aside from seafood, you might be surprised to know that Eastside Fish Fry & Grill is known for spectacular chicken wings prepared with a 48-hour dry rub marinade and fried to order. Must-Try: Fried walleye (pike perch), fresh and local from the Great Lakes. The Cosmos1200 N Larch St., Lansing, MI In Episode 8 of Season 28, game Michigan pizza-lovers what they wanted with coverage of The Cosmos, which Guy Fieri himself described as “an out of this world pizza joint.”. With about a dozen pizzas on the menu to choose from, they’re sure to satisfy any taste, from those looking for classic flavors to those brave enough to try the “Trust Us” option for a delicious surprise that will knock your socks off.
