The cylinder does not turn and is in very good condition with light wear on the sharp edges. The barrel has a touch of holster wear and a few light scratches. What would the value be of this pistol? SS# 11283. Also interested in the year made. There is an oval which appears to read 21 inside.

Coyde: The Savage Model 101 was made in the period 1960-1968. This revolver should have the Savage date code, which consists of a lightly stamped oval or 1/4" circle enclosing one or two numbers and a letter. The letter is the date of manufacture code (i.e. 1960 = L, 1961 = M, 1962 = N...1968 = V; "O" and "Q" are omitted).

I have seen the date code stamped on the right side of the frame below the cylinder.

Retail value for a gun in the condition shown would range from $125 to $175 depending on mechanical and bore condition.

Yes, the oval is as you describe with 21 inside the oval.

Coyde: The date code is the letter, the number(s) are the final inspector.

Use a magnifying glass to verify the number(s) and letter in the oval.
