  1. Hi pros!
    I need some help here,

I just finished building af workstation for Adobe applications.
Now - when I try to install Win2000prof. OS I am completely lost.

I have configured a RAID 5 with 3 disks ATLAS 10K same model all of them
powered by an Adaptec RAID controller AAA-133U2. CD is Plextor bootable.
Everything goes well (I press F6 during installation and the system acceps
    the Adaptec Array1000U2 driver disk.
After installation of the driver the installation continues a few minuttes
until I get the text "Setup is starting Windows 2000" in the lower left
corner of the screen. Theneverything stops..first stops the CD drive to spin
    then a
short break and then it starts to spin again and after some minuttes the CD
stops completely ? And that is it - the end a blue microsoft screen with the
    above text ?

I have tried everything what is possible for a "normal" computer guy:

-updated the bios of the raid controller
-updated the mainboard bios (Microstar 6156 with BX chipset)
-swapping graphics cards from agp to pci and opposite
-disabled everything in bios unless the most important
-installed a IDE disk with Win2000prof. - that worked well. After this
operation I added my RAID card but again
I ended up with the pc not able to work with driver from adaptec..even the
the detection of the raid card went ok
I mean the dialog boxes came up as a sign of the new hardware.

Anybody around having a good advice ?

  3. How are you installing the RAID driver? I had to make my own driver floppy and
hit the F6 key during 2000 setup and add it that way - twice - before 2k would
set up on my array. Something to try, if you haven't. And you've checked for
newer drivers? I'm just SWAGGING here - I'm not familiar with Adaptec.

"Mine is a Promise array, so YMMV."

The same method is needed for the Adaptec RAID cards. The only ones that
will not need a driver floppy will be the ancient ones.

  5. I wondered. I've had this motherboard with the onboard chip (Asus board) for a
very long time, and I'm the only one I know who even has a board capable of
RAID, let alone who's actually running one - no one else I know here even knows
    what a RAID array _is._

Do you have to install the drivers twice in setup with Adaptec? You do, with
mine. I don't know if I'll have to with the new board. I have about 2 metric
buttloads of computer parts on the way - this CPU appears to be failing, and I'm
rebuilding this entire system. And then the other one. And then the _other_
other one. And then, I'll have enough parts for another system left over, so....

    Heh. Heh, heh.

Yanno, I do so many servers anymore, I forget the exact procedure. It's
almost automatic now... But, I think it does ask twice for the driver
    disk...

  7. Thanks for the advice,

I have tried to download the new driver for the RAID controller from
Adaptec's website - but my system rejects the floppy disk. This thing is
pretty weird because that means that I am stuck with the initial driver from
Adaptec (the one there was included in the retail box. I think I will try
once more to get a new driver from Adaptec some how. During the installation
win2000 ask only one time for the floppy disk. It does ask about if I have
any other hardware I want to install - but basicly the system is quite happy
about the driver included in the retail box. Even though it is a beta
    driver.

    Thanks again,

I post a few lines when I am done with Adaptec !

    Regards, Thomas

  8. If the floppy is bad itself it will do that. Also, the system doesn't _ask_ more
than once, at least not in my case. The screen comes up and asks you to hit the
S key to install the driver, and then you select the proper driver and hit
Enter. It then goes back to the "install a driver" screen once the driver is
loaded, and you go through the S/select driver/hit Enter process a second time.
_Then,_ when it goes back to the driver installation screen a third time, you
    simply hit Enter to continue.
