"My music is melancholic because of the true emotion I put into each in every one of my songs. They all carry the pain from true stories whether it be mine or someone else’s."

Snøw & teqkoi you dont want me anymore lyrics

Meet Snøw, the rising US-based star who already gained the title as ‘king of lo-fi’. Over the past year, the artist was able to build up his fanbase massively thanks to platforms such as Tik Tok – 1,5 billion streams and one platinum release later, he has just released his brand new single “Spilled My Coffee” featuring Rxseboy & Jack Cullen which is due to become a huge summer hit. Here at EQUATE we caught up with the talent and spoke about all things music, lo-fi and more…

Words & Interview by Danielle Temeng

EQ: Hi Snøw, welcome to EQUATE. Where did you develop your love for music, specifically the lo-fi genre we’ve seen from your latest releases?

S: It’s super cliché, but I’ve always loved music. For as long as I can remember music was my outlet, like it is for many artists. When I was younger song writing was just a way for me to pass time. It wasn’t until high school that I realized I didn’t want to work a 9-5 job after graduation. I then started taking music seriously and worked on branding myself as Snøw. Musicians like Shiloh Dynasty and artists like XXXTENTACION had a huge impact on me in high school as I was enduring the pain every teenager experiences. It just happened.

EQ: You’re hailed by fans, listeners, and tastemakers like Zane Lowe as “the lo-fi king” but if you could describe your sound in 3 words which would they be, and why?

S: Versatile, melancholic, nostalgic.  My sound is versatile because even though I’m known as the Lofi king, I’ve really expanded the amount of genres I fall into. Throw any beat at me and I’ll do my best to flow on it regardless of the genre.   My music is melancholic because of the true emotion I put into each in every one of my songs. They all carry the pain from true stories whether it be mine or someone else’s. All my songs have the feeling of nostalgia attached to them. My listeners really feel a sense of longing for what once was when they hear my relatable tracks about being in love and then broken-hearted.

“On this upcoming project, y’all are gonna see exactly how versatile I am. I truly believe that the best songs I’ve ever written are on this album and I’m so proud of it.”

EQ: Your new single ‘Spilled My Coffee’ has racked up some impressive numbers upon release. What was the creative process like for you collaborating with Rxseboy & Jack Cullen, and what does it mean to you to see your music do so well?

S: When I first was asked to remix this song, I heard Jack’s “spilled my coffee” part and I instantly knew the direction I wanted to take. I had the vision and Poetics was able to help me execute it perfectly. Writing this song was so fun because I was able to convey a sense of light-hearted humour while still telling a story. I also met Jack Cullen, who is a super talented dude, and now I have a friend in London! And working with Rxseboy is always fun, that’s my homie! Shout out Stay Inside!

EQ: You’re part of the Stay Inside Music collective, can you tell our readers a little about what that is and also how to work with other like-minded creatives unless your own artistry?

S: Stay Inside is a music collective consisting of some of the upcoming lo-fi musicians. We use our collective to help, support and promote each other. Working with artists who have the same passion I do is really inspiring. Music is the most personal thing I share about myself and working with other artists who understand really helps —— Some of the best songs I have ever made feature the talented musicians from Stay Inside. Love you guys!

EQ:  With your musical trajectory pretty much limitless and exciting, what can we expect next from you? Are there any EQUATE exclusives you can let us in on?

S: I’ve been working my ass off this past year to write as many songs as I can and dropping as many singles as possible. But I realized maybe it’s finally time I put an album together for the amazing fans I have. Since 2019 y’all have been asking for an album… it’s finally going to happen. On this upcoming project, y’all are gonna see exactly how versatile I am. I truly believe that the best songs I’ve ever written are on this album and I’m so proud of it. Can’t wait to share it with y’all! 🤘🏼
