What is the difference between contemporary and lyrical

By Samantha Bellerose, B.Ed, Dip.Dance (Performing Arts)

Lyrical Ballet or Lyrical Jazz? Are they different types of dance or the same? Ironically they are the same but different! Lyrical dance can be more ballet or more jazz. It can be more contemporary or even more hip hop. So if a style of dance can be both Ballet and Hip Hop what exactly is it?

What is the difference between contemporary and lyrical

Lyrical is a quality of dance. It is expressive and fluid. Poses showing off dancers’ flexibility and strength are held as long as possible, jumps are high and explosive and turns are fluid and melt into the next.

Movement in lyrical dance is used to show intense emotions and music and lyric choice helps to determine the emotional tone and choice of the choreography of lyrical dance.

Lyrical dance is generally an addition to the ballet or jazz dancers’ arsenal. Technique and amalgamation of both disciplines need to be mastered so that the dancer can concentrate on emotionally performing the steps rather than on their execution.

It is also important to understand that there IS a difference between Lyrical and Contemporary dance, especially for those entering competitions. Lyrical dance is fluid and dynamic, it should follow and match the tone of the song and lyrics being danced to and is emotionally expressive. Whereas contemporary dance distorts ballet technique, is generally avant-garde, and is dancer-centric, with a focus on the choreography or a theme, idea, or concept. Similar dance steps may be used in both styles but it is the way in which they are sequenced, performed, and matched with sound and music that can make them different.

This page is just one of hundreds of definitions of the many styles and genres of dance. This library is being continually added to by the writers and contributors of Dance Parent 101!

Contemporary and Lyrical dance are sub sets of the Jazz dance genre. Each include elements of ballet, jazz and modern dance styles.

Contemporary dance stresses versatility and improvisation.  Contemporary dance is an organic, expressive style where the dancers explore freedom of movement, allowing their bodies to freely express their innermost feelings and tell stories. The movement style ranges from sharp and fast to gooey and fluid and is performed to a wide range of music.

Music used for lyrical dance is typically emotionally charged and expressive.  The lyrics of the chosen song serve as inspiration for the dancers'  movements and expressions. Movements in lyrical dance are characterized by fluidity and grace, with the dancer flowing seamlessly from one move to another, holding finishing steps as long as possible. Leaps are exceptionally high and soaring, and turns are fluid and continuous. Ballet technique is essential for Lyrical dance.

DFR offers Contemporary/Lyrical fusion classes which explore  the various movement and expressive elements of each style, while placing focus on proper technique, body placement, alignment and control.

Modern, Contemporary, Lyrical, What’s The Difference?

What is the difference between contemporary and lyrical

We get asked all the time, “What’s Modern?” and I would say that though Modern isn’t as mainstream as Contemporary and Lyrical Dance, it’s actually the most important of the three.

Just like Ballet is the form of dance I believe dancers should practice if they want to be their most refined, Modern is what dancers should practice in order have a base of technique for their Contemporary and Lyrical practice. It’s the foundation that Contemporary and Lyrical were built on and like any good structure, dancing has to have a solid foundation.

Contemporary is often a blending of Ballet & Modern and I feel it’s based on showcasing the choreographers personal voice. It’s an avenue for a choreographer to self express without the boundaries of classical Ballet but all the refinement of both Ballet & Modern technique.

Lyrical to me is a faction of Contemporary dance in which the piece expresses a feeling or story in a more realist way. A good friend of mine spelled it out for me one day when I asked her what Lyrical was, because up until a couple years ago I couldn’t even define it! She said, “Lyrical tells the story of the song.” It made sense to me to think of it this way; the movement in Lyrical is like the words to a song.

A good friend of Shayne’s & mine is in a broadway national tour and he said the dancers with proper technical training are not only more refined looking but they also get injured less.

If you’d like to try out proper Modern dance training, as well as cutting edge Contemporary and Improv, feel free to reach out and we’ll set you up with a trial class in these different dance styles.

Happy Dancing!

Contemporary is an important genre of dance performed in societies around the world, celebrated by people both young and old. Developed during the 20th century, contemporary dance involves incorporating aspects of movement from several other genres such as jazz, modern and ballet.

What do judges look for in a lyrical dance?

Dance competitions are judged based on a variety of criteria, including a dancer's age, level, technique, performance quality, choreography, and presentation. All dance competitions have a different rubric for scoring, but a judge will always take these things into consideration when adjudicating.
