What size tubing to use for bleeding brakes

  1. What size tubing to fit over bleeder valves?

I'm planning on bleeding my brakes this weekend and want to pick up some tubing for the spent fluid on the way home. I've seen a lot of DIYs out there but none that mention the size of the tubing that will fit over the bleeder valve. Does anyone know what inner diameter I should grab?

I bought some last Sunday, vacum hose (black) I think 7/32? I'll check when I get home and post it up.

  3. 1/4 inch vacuum hose+wire hanger+16oz powerade bottle.

  4. I was going to say 3/16 ID, but 7/32 is probably also pretty good. I think 1/8 is too small.

OT: There are a lot of DUY for brake bleeding, but none of them address the ABS. Isn't that an important part of the brake system? Or is the little amount of brake fluid left in the ABS pump and lines inconsequential if the rest of the brake system is bled without introducing air?

I drive a Metallic Fern Green 1998 BMW M3 Convertible with a hard top. I just rolled over 67k, and I rate the current appearance of the car as 7.8/10, pending repair of some trim pieces. I rate the drive condition as a 7.1/10 until I figure out why my clutch gets into a "slippy mood" evey few months. It is bone-dry stock, except for a modern head unit and slotted/dimpled rotors and ceramic pads. I like it this way. It is awesome.

    That is all. Carry on.

    One of these bottles:

Pop the center piece of the cap out, feed the tube in, wrap the hanger around the bottle and curve it up. Perfect used brake fluid catch can.

Inconsequential. Also, a power bleeder will usually relieve you of this worry. I'm not sure if you can rent them but if you can do it.

  7. Front and rear are different. Could be 1/4 front and 3/16 rear. I would not use vacuum hose. Use clear plastic tubing and hold a shoplight behind the tube when you bleed so you can see even the tiniest bubbles.

  8. 7/32" fit both front & rear, all bleeded valves are 7mm. prepackage 72" lenght adv auto parts. Use a midget box end 7mm.

  9. You kids realize 7/32 and 1/4 is 1/32 different in size?

    1/4 is easy to find.

Trust me, I have bled many a BMW brake system.

  10. Plastic aquarium tubing is cheap and comes in several sizes.

But that 1/32 is why we're on bf.c posting the differences! LOL

    Definetly a hardparking category!

  13. They sell extremely cheap brake bleeding kits at autoparts stores. I get them just for the clear tubing.

  15. After doing it last night I'd say you could get away with 1/4" but 7/32" would be better.

You are right. They are different on my car, though. I forgot that I installed rebuilt front calipers that have all new hardware and bleeders are larger.
