When is the next leap year 2022

Leap years mean an extra day in February every four years.

An additional day is tagged onto February, giving it 29 days, as an adjustment to make up for it taking a little bit over 365 days for the earth to orbit the sun, so every four years the year has 366 days.

This year is not a leap year, the last one was in 2020. Tuesday will be the beginning of March, Monday is the final day of February in 2022.

The next leap year is not for two years yet. Traditionally, February 29 is a day where women propose marriage to male partners, not that there is anything wrong with proposing to a man on any other day of the year.

February 29 births create an interesting situation, as they only get to celebrate on their actual birthday every four years. Most choose to mark their celebrations on February 28 or March 1 when it is not a leap year.

When is the next leap year?

The last leap year was February 29, 2020. That means the next one will be February 29, 2024, as they are four years apart.

To be a leap year, the year number must be divisible by four.

The Royal Observatory explains : "To be a leap year, the year number must be divisible by four – except for end-of-century years, which must be divisible by 400. This means that the year 2000 was a leap year, although 1900 was not."

It adds: "2020, 2024 and 2028 are all leap years."

Why are there leap years?

A year is measured in the time it takes the earth to orbit the sun. That orbit takes approximately 365 days and six hours, which means there are six extra hours left over each year. To make up for this, those six hours are added together every four years to make a 29th day in February.

So, in a four-year cycle, we have three years of 365 days, and then one year with 366 days, to take into account the extra six hours it takes for the earth to orbit the Sun. 4 x 6 = 24, and there are 24 hours in a day.

The Royal Observatory says "Because the Earth takes a little over 365 days to orbit the Sun, we need to make adjustments to keep the seasons from drifting: leap years and even leap seconds."

What's a leap second?

Occasionally, a second is added to the year's calendar to make up for slight differences between orbit time and the length of a year, even with leap years added to the calendar.

The last leap second was added on December 31, 2016.

It was thought there could be a leap second added in June 2022, but according to Time and Date, that won't happen and the next time it could is December 2022.

As you’re nearing the end of February, dates can get confusing. The irregular month, already unique in its 28-day length, sometimes has a 29th day, also known as Leap Day.

This is even worse for the 5 million people with Leap Day birthdays, according to a History estimate, whose real birthdays come only once every four years.

This phenomenon may cause you a small inconvenience, but leap years are not just a cruel trick calendar companies play to keep you guessing. There’s actually a very good astronomical reason for the added day — but we’ll get into that later.

When is the next leap year?

Generally speaking, leap years come every four years: 2024, 2028 and 2032, for example, will all be leap years.

Usually, if a year is divisible by 4, that makes it a leap year, but this rule does not hold for years which are multiples of one hundred, according to History.com. Although the Earth’s orbit around the sun was previously thought to be 365.25 days, it actually takes closer to 365.24 days says History.com.

To fix this small discrepancy, century years which are not divisible by 400 are not leap years. The year 2000 was a leap year, but the year 2100 will not be.

When is the next leap year 2022

Why do we have leap years?

Because the amount of time the Earth takes to spin on its axis is not dependent on the amount of time the Earth takes to complete a full orbit around the sun, the number of 24-hour rotations that fit into a calendar year is not a whole number.

According to History, a leap year is the solution to this. Just one extra day every four years keeps our calendar lined up correctly with the orbit of the Earth, meaning winter stays winter, and summer stays summer.

How many days are in a leap year?

There are 366 days in a leap year — one more than the typical 365-day year.

When was the last leap year?

Until 2024, 2020 would have been the most recent leap year.

Is leap year every 4 years?

For this reason, not every four years is a leap year. The rule is that if the year is divisible by 100 and not divisible by 400, leap year is skipped. The year 2000 was a leap year, for example, but the years 1700, 1800, and 1900 were not. The next time a leap year will be skipped is the year 2100.

Why 2024 will be a leap year?

To be a leap year, the year number must be divisible by four – except for end-of-century years, which must be divisible by 400. This means that the year 2000 was a leap year, although 1900 was not. 2020, 2024 and 2028 are all leap years.

Why 2022 is not a leap year?

Our planet takes approximately 365.25 days to orbit the sun once. It's that . 25 that creates the need for a leap year every four years. During non-leap years, aka common years – like 2022 – the calendar doesn't take into account the extra quarter of a day required by Earth to complete a single orbit.

Does February 2022 have 29 days?

The month February 2022 has 28 days and starts on a Tuesday. All weekdays occur four times.
