Here's where to watch the 50 Shades Of Grey movie series online, including whether they're on Netflix, Hulu or Prime. For a brief time during the '90s, erotic thrillers were in vogue thanks to the success of Basic Instinct. This led to a wealth of movies chasing that steamy bandwagon, but after the critical and commercial failures of Madonna's Body Of Evidence and Bruce Willis' Color Of Night, this subgenre quickly died off. They were revived - albeit briefly - thanks to the success of 2015's 50 Shades Of Grey, an adaptation of E.J. James' bestselling novel.

James' novel was originally Twilight fan fiction before being rewritten to explore the twisted romance between millionaire Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) and college student Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson). While the books received largely terrible reviews, they were incredibly popular with readers. 50 Shades Of Grey - which Emilia Clarke rejected - itself suffered through a fraught production, with original lead Charlie Hunnam exiting just before production began and director Sam Taylor-Johnson and author James clashing creatively over how the story was adapted for the big screen.

Behind-the-scenes battles and bad reviews didn't stop 50 Shades Of Grey from making over $560 million worldwide. Taylor-Johnson stepped down from helming sequels 50 Shades Darker and 50 Shades Freed, both of which were directed by Glengarry Glen Ross' James Foley. While James' did pen a fourth novel named Grey that told the original novel from the title character's perspective, there are no plans to adapt that into a movie. The 50 Shades Of Grey movie trilogy is easy to find online, though none of them are currently on Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime.

Instead, the 50 Shades Of Grey movie series can be streamed for free - with adverts - from The Roku Channel, according to JustWatch. 50 Shades Of Grey, 50 Shades Darker and 50 Shades Freed are also available to rent or purchase at prices starting at $3.00 from AMC On Demand, iTunes, Amazon Video, Google Play Movies, DirecTV and many other platforms.

While both 50 Shades Darker and 50 Shades Freed both turned tidy profits, they received even worst reviews than the original did. Co-stars Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson seemingly have little to no interest in reprising their roles for another entry, with the latter recalling the "mayhem" of working on the original movie due to the level of control James exerted. The success of 50 Shades Of Grey didn't lead to a revival of the erotic thriller subgenre either, though it did spawn a parody version in Fifty Shades Of Black, starring Marlon Wayans; in keeping with the source material it was mocking, the film also received poor reviews.
