OP I completely understand what you mean. I go to school in Alabama and we pay $300 minimum for parking after paying $6k-12k a semester. It's outrageous to pay for parking at a school you go to. I do think we should register our cars so not anyone can park there but they shouldn't require more money if you're already paying tuition that's way too high

Exactly

I think the only way you could understand is if you’ve been to a higher college education institution and have had to deal with the foolishness.

If you haven’t you’re not really going to see the issue with the current pay for park system.

Where exactly do you go to school, im looking into schools and wanna know your opinion. Im right down the road from Auburn

$800 after paying $27,000

As a commuter, I see it as a way to price out some residents. If you make it too expensive for someone to park their car for a week who never touches it except to go get groceries or go out on the weekend, that's one more spot for me. I go to a big school and it's a real problem. My parking pass isn't outrageous and I don't like having to pay for it, but the alternative is utter waste and chaos.

Just wait till you get to work for the university, you'll have to pay even more for a parking pass!

PAYING TO PARK AT WORK

People . . .

level 2

Mate, NHS in the uk, nurses who are already shafted in pay imo have to pay for parking which can be up to 5% of their yearly salary

level 2

They're deductible in your taxes though. Also, most universities/companies have a reimbursement program for paid parking/transit pass/bus passes.

If students had free parking wouldn't it just be built in to the tuition and students that didn't have cars would be paying for nothing?

level 2

What you’re saying really only works for new schools. Existing schools can just not change their tuitions. That way the money is not coming from the students.

level 2

That assumes it costs the university as much as they charge the students for parking. What's likely going on is that they're making money off of student parking. I'm not sure how directly that reduces the cost of tuition

I know where I went to school they sold 3 stickers for each available parking spot. So you were not even getting a product for your money, just the potential for the product.

level 2

They had parking tiers for us too. If you didn't pay extra, you were parking at the top of the parking garage. And up there, most of the spots were taken. Guess how many times I had to shark and waste time/gas waiting for a spot while also being late for my class?

People aren't naturally racist

Shit man, I don't mind paying for parking as long as it isn't ridiculous. I pay 20 bucks for a sticker that pretty much lasts forever.

Thank god for community college I guess.

$20 on my campus is only good for 2.5 days of parking :/

At GCHS the students are offered multiple parking spaces throughout the campus, some located better than others. Along with that parking comes a price, which a student must pay to be allowed to park there throughout the school day. Some feel that it’s unfair to pay for parking that is already paid for through taxes.

A few of the parking spots offered are only available for certain students. For example the senior lot is primarily for seniors, with the exception of some juniors. A majority of the student body feel as if the prices for parking passes are a to high. Over the years GCHS has raised the prices making it hard for some students to afford parking along with gas and other school activities. For example athletes are charged to park on an off campus parking lot. Athletes already endure the prices to participate in school sports, parking should just be included. Many question if the parking the school offers is worth the price? Some students still have quite a walk from their car to the school buildings. Others are faced with traffic jams while leaving campus. Note that staff is not charged for parking, only students. Is it fair to single out minors to take on the cost for parking?

Senior Steven Hartline was asked his opinion on students paying for parking. His response was, “No we shouldn’t have to pay for student parking. Senior year is already expensive as it is, if you have good grades and good attendance it should be free. Not $75 to pay to park at the school you go to.” Even though parking comes with an expensive price it comes along with some pros. A parking pass, is a guarantee that students will have a place to park. Saving them time from searching for a parking space before school.

If the price of parking passes are lowered it may encourage more students to drive to school. It may also avoid students from parking illegally to avoid far walking distances. Students aren’t offered many free parking spaces around the campus. Therefore students resort to parking on private business and local neighborhood streets, sometimes creating conflict.
