Is your dog showing a concerning behavior where he starts to cough and gag soon after drinking water or other types of beverages? Here are the most common reasons for this behavior and tips on handling this concerning situation. Your Dog May Have Kennel CoughWhenever a dog shows a sudden change in behavior, it’s important to first rule out medical conditions as the primary cause of the sudden change. In this case, the coughing and gagging might be a result of a medical condition called kennel cough. Kennel cough is a respiratory infection that can affect the dog’s lungs and windpipes. While it isn’t a fatal disease, it can definitely cause a lot of misery and pain for your dog. You may notice symptoms like dry coughs, fever, and lethargy. Please call the vet if you notice these symptoms in addition to the coughing occurrences after drinking water. Your Dog Drinks Water Too FastIt might also be a case where your dog is simply gulping water too fast. This may cause him to choke a little and cough as well. Dogs that drink water too fast may also puke out some of the water after. If you notice that the water in the water bowl is disappearing within seconds of giving it to your dog then there are two steps to take. First, only give your dog small amounts of water at a time. This is the same thing you would do for a dog that eats too fast. If you want to make sure that your dog has access to water at all times (because you aren’t always with him) then we suggest getting the UPSKY Dog Bowl, a slow-feeding water bowl that will help control your dog’s drinking speed. Foreign Object Stuck in Dog’s ThroatIt may be a case where something is stuck in your dog’s throat. Dogs that have foreign objects in their throat will likely cough throughout the whole day. For example, you may have given your dog a bone or a rawhide that may broken into smaller sharp pieces as the dog chewed on it. These sharp pieces may have lodged into your dog’s esophagus. This is an important reason why you need to pay close attention to what your dog eats. It’s important to get an examination with the vet as soon as possible and extract any foreign objects stuck in your dog’s respiration system.
