2004 F-150 Oil Weight05-31-2005, 10:34 AM Show Join Date: Apr 2005 Location: Maryland Posts: 31 Likes: 0 Received 0 Likes on 0 Posts 2004 F-150 Oil Weight
I just did my first oil change on my truck over the holiday weekend. The owners manual called for 5W-20; however, my dad seemed to feel that it was too light and thought it sounded like the grade I would use in the winter time. I figured the engineers at Ford probably know better than either of us about which oil works best in the engine; but, I did want to see what you all thought. Go with what the owners manual says or go with something a little heavier like 10W-30? Thanks in advance... 05-31-2005, 10:42 AMJoin Date: Feb 2005 Location: Florida Posts: 398 Likes: 0 Received 0 Likes on 0 Posts Stick with the 5/20. It is spec for these trucks. It will give you better gas mileage and is safe for warranty reasons. Just dont let it get low on level. Also I believe the 5/20 is part synthetic. 05-31-2005, 11:34 AMJoin Date: Apr 2005 Location: Canton, Ohio Posts: 647 1998 4.6-v8 I'm using Shell Rotella T 15w-40 for my first oil change. Is this a good truck oil, or do you think it is too heavy for my small V-8 ?? 05-31-2005, 11:55 AMJoin Date: May 2005 Posts: 320 Likes: 0 Received 0 Likes on 0 Posts 05-31-2005, 11:56 AMJoin Date: Jan 2000 Location: Along Lake Erie Posts: 3,205 Likes: 0 Indeed, the correct oil for a '01-up F-150 is a semi-synthetic 5W20. I wouldn't recommend (or use) anything else for warranty purposes, except maybe a full synthetic if it's available. Just my opinion though.... if it's out of warranty, do as you see fit. IMHO, regular oil and filter changes are more important than the weight of oil used anyways. -Joe 05-31-2005, 12:26 PM Join Date: Feb 2005 Location: Florida Posts: 398 Likes: 0 Received 0 Likes on 0 Posts Quote: Originally Posted by jjmIII I'm using Shell Rotella T 15w-40 for my first oil change. If it does not burn it off too quick, stick with it, if it burns it quick go with a heavier weight like 10-30. 07-26-2014, 10:56 AMSenior Member Thread Starter Join Date: Feb 2014 Location: Louisville, Kentucky Posts: 173 Likes: 0 Received 1 Like on 1 Post What engine oil are you running in your 04-08 5.4L? Interested in hearing what you guys have to say on this topic. I was reading on another site about running oil other than 5w-20 in these trucks to cut down on VCT ticking and/or dieseling sounds from the 5.4L at low rpms. Apparently, there was a service bulletin years ago stating that owners may elect to use motorcraft 10w-40. I had read folks also used 5w-30 as well. I've run nothing but 5w-20, but found this interesting all the same. However, I only have about 3000 miles on my rig, so I may not be the best source of information on the VCT issue. 07-26-2014, 07:57 PMJoin Date: Mar 2007 Location: League City, Texas Posts: 2,275 Likes: 0 I recently changed from Royal Purple 10w 30 and switched to Mobil1 5w 30. 07-27-2014, 01:07 PMJoin Date: Apr 2011 Location: Socal Posts: 51 Likes: 0 Received 0 Likes on 0 Posts Amsoil 5w20 fully synthetic with archoil friction modifier. 07-27-2014, 02:39 PMTechnical Article Contributor Join Date: Mar 2008 Location: Mansfield, P.A. I was starting to get the VCT shakes with 5w-20 and 5w-30. YMMV, but for me the heavier weight oil raised the oil pressure enough to get the VCT system up and running again. EDIT: This is probably what you're referring to. Definitely never made it to an official TSB, and not sure if one was ever put out for the 04-08s specifically.
For me, the shaking and real loud noise only happened at operating temp under light throttle. I could confirm with my Gryphon tuner that the variable timing was going wacky. For my next oil change, I'll probably go with 5w40, just so it's not as thick through the winter (cold starts). Last edited by mletchworth; 07-28-2014 at 02:32 PM. I'm a little over 104000. I'm going to have it torn down and looked at eventually. It makes me nervous but power seems fine. 07-28-2014, 04:01 PMJoin Date: Feb 2009 Posts: 164 Likes: 0 Received 1 Like on 1 Post I just changed my 5-20 to 5-30 and my dieseling and ticking noises went away.
