3.8L Coolant Temp Sensor for Dash Gauge?

This past week I've started experiencing some odd engine temp readings. I'm currently leaning towards needing to replace the thermostat and figured while I'm at it I might as well replace the sensor just in case that ends up being the problem.

Here's what I've been experiencing. Typically my engine takes about 15 minutes to come up to full temp when the dash temp reaches the 12 O'clock (50%) position. This past week I was driving to the airport which is about a 45 minute drive. 30 minutes into my drive I noticed my heat wasn't performing up to snuff. I looked down at the engine temp dial and noticed the needle was still at the 25% reading. Then 5 minutes later, I saw the temp dial quickly climb from the 25% reading to the 50% reading. Which at least made me feel good that I wasn't going to overheat before reaching the airport. So after I got back from my trip, I noticed this is now starting to become a regular occurrence and I've also witnessed where the temp dial was sitting at the 50% position and then drop back down to the 25% position for an extended time. The heat from my blowers tended to correspond with the temp readings on the dial, so I think the sensor readings are probably working ok, but I have a thermostat which is starting to stick. The thing I find odd in all this, is that the gauge has not gone over the 50% reading to make me have a concern about over heating.

Anyways, I was looking at the engine to determine which temp sensor to replace. I had originally assumed there would be a temp sensor located near the thermostat which there is, but there is also a sensor near the water pump which made me start to wonder which of these sensors does the gauge on the dash actually read to display the temperature on the gauge?

Sensor near Thermostat?

Sensor near the water pump?

Does anyone know the Mopar P/Ns for these sensors as well?

That's kinda odd. 3.6L has only one sensor that I know of, in the side of the block.

Yeah, I'm kind of curious which each of those sensor are.

After experiencing the the temp gauge fluctuations it got me wondering which side of the thermostat the temp sensor was located on, to see if what I was witnessing made sense where I kind of expected based on my symptoms that maybe the temp sensor was located on the radiator side of thermostat instead of the engine side but that doesn't seem to be the case....but then again there seems to be 2 different whatcha-ma-call-its that kind of look like engine temp sensors.

I think I'm going to replace my thermostat and I might as well replace the water pump as well while I have to drain some coolant. Although, I prefer to do things in individual steps so I'm more certain of the actual problem I'm fixing. Was going to look into getting those 2 sensors, but without knowing what they're called or a part number it makes them kind of difficult to look up.

I'm at 166K miles now, and none of those sensors, thermostat and water pump have been replaced. So it's not like their not due for a replacment.

So, I was looking at the 3.8L cooling system today and found this write up which seems well done -

It looks like the sensor is the one right there by the thermostat. The sensor by the water pump appears to be your cam position sensor per this link (look at pic down in "step 2") -

Also note in that cooling system write up, seems you should loose little to no coolant in swapping that sensor out on the 3.8L. Handy to know so you can do it individually and see if that was a problem or not before doing the thermostat and WP. Just for comparison, on the 3.6L, I think I recall losing about 1/2c max....but it's in a different location.

Where is the coolant sensor located on Jeep Wrangler?

The coolant temp sensor is on the back of the motor on the drivers side.

Where is the temp coolant sensor located?

In most cars, the primary ECT sensor (ECT sensor 1) is installed near the thermostat in the cylinder head or block or on the thermostat housing. A second coolant temperature sensor could be installed in another part of the engine, or in the radiator.

What are the symptoms of a failing coolant temperature sensor?

What Signs May Signal Your Coolant Temperature Sensor May Be Failing?.
Poor Fuel Economy. ... .
Irregular Temperature Readings. ... .
Black Smoke from Your Exhaust. ... .
Your Engine is Overheating. ... .
Your Check Engine Light is On..

How do I know if my coolant temperature sensor is working?

To confirm, you could run your vehicle through an emissions test. If everything else is in order, failure in this test should be because of a faulty coolant temperature sensor. Another telltale sign of your coolant temperature sensor not functioning properly is if your engine is overheating frequently.
