The 2021 Mazda CX-9 is a SUV that can seat up to seven passengers in its three rows of seats. There are five trims available—Sport, Touring, Carbon Edition, Grand Touring, and Signature—and we will focus on the base trim for this blog. The 2021 CX-9 has a SKYACTIV®-G 2.5 Dynamic Pressure Turbo engine that can achieve 320 lb-ft of torque at 2,500 rpm. Front-wheel drive and i-ACTIV AWD® are available. The AWD option would be better for those living in the southeastern Wisconsin area, since this comes with Off-road Traction Assist.

When it comes to the EPA-estimated fuel economy, this will depend on which drivetrain is chosen. The FWD option can get 22 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. With AWD, drivers can expect a lower fuel economy of 20 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. Both drivetrains are equipped with an automatic transmission. The 2021 Mazda CX-9 has 18×8 aluminum alloy wheels and a tire size of P255/60 R-18 all-season.

We have a thrilling week ahead with the Mazda CX-9. This is one underrated SUV that deserves more love. We still have a lot to learn about the 2022 Mazda CX-9, but so far, only three minor things keep it from being perfect.

Three potential 2022 Mazda CX-9 problems

Zoom, zoom, baby! We’re in the 2022 Mazda CX-9 for the week, and it’s pretty exciting. We have the top-spec Signature trim with all the bells and whistles. It starts at about $47,000 with plenty of premium value included.

After taking it on a three-hour road trip from Rock Hill, SC, to Asheville, NC, there only seemed to be a few minor setbacks.

1. There isn’t a touchscreen

The Mazda CX-9 comes with a 10.3-inch infotainment system with clear graphics and a fast response time. But the unit isn’t a touchscreen. Instead of tapping the screen, you control everything with a rotary dial.

This seems to add a few extra steps while finding the perfect podcast or using the navigation system. However, the system is intuitive and only takes a few minutes to learn.

2. The sunroof is small

After reviewing so many trucks and SUVs, it’s strange to have something with a small sunroof. The sunroof does allow fresh air and light to enter the cabin, but we miss the massive panoramic roofs that the Toyota Tundra, Toyota Venza, Ford Escape, Jeep Grand Wagoneer, and more have to offer.

3. Can tall people fit?

At 5’1”, I had plenty of space in the 2022 Mazda CX-9. However, I still felt like my head was close to the roof. Hopefully, the seat adjusts to provide plenty of room for taller folks without eating into the second row.

The Mazda CX-9 is comfortable

Now that the potential issues are out of the way, we can focus on the good 2022 Mazda CX-9 aspects. It’s incredibly comfortable. The front row seats have plenty of space, support, and adjustment controls to find the perfect position.

The CX-9 has a smooth ride over the pavement, and even rough sections of country roads are absorbed with ease. Plus, the interior is peaceful and quiet without the intrusion of wind and road noise at highway speeds.

Mazda has the strongest ventilated seats out of every vehicle we’ve tested so far. They are perfect for keeping you cool on summer days. Also, heated seats, heated mirrors, and the heated steering wheel will keep you toasty in the winter.

The 2022 CX-9 is fun

Despite being a model for families, the 2022 Mazda CX-9 is sporty and engaging. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine cranks out up to 250 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque. It can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 7.6 seconds.

The transmission provides smooth shifts, and the brakes are confident. Body roll is limited around curves, and the handling is pretty responsive. It corners well compared to rivals for confident and seamless daily driving.

Plus, all-wheel drive (AWD) is standard across the board. However, it’s more suited for inclement weather situations than off-roading.

We will keep you updated as we learn more about the CX-9. This is only the beginning of the week. We will do a deep dive into its suspension, cargo space, and convenience features while driving in various conditions.
