Aot season 5 part 2 release date

Attack on Titan spoilers won't be found here.

UPDATE: Attack on Titan is coming back for a third — and presumably final — run of episodes in 2023 following the end of season four, part two. This announcement was made on April 3, 2022, the same day that Episode 87 aired worldwide. What follows is the original article written two days earlier on April 1, 2022.

Attack on Titan fans have been on quite the journey this past decade. Since the anime first made its debut almost ten years ago on April 7, 2013, viewers have been forced to endure huge gaps between seasons, and even a major studio change for the fourth and final run.

Being an Attack on Titan fan has almost been as harrowing as what these characters go through on the actual show. But here we are, finally at the end, ready to see this epic story wrap up on its own terms... Or are we?

By all accounts, episode 87, titled 'The Dawn of Humanity', is supposed to be Attack on Titan's final episode. Originally scheduled for March 27, the finale was pushed back to April 3, which means that fans are yet to see how the story concludes onscreen. And that's left some viewers wondering if the story will even conclude at all.

The official synopsis shared by Crunchyroll sure does sound like an ending of sorts: "Eren looks back on what has brought him to this moment, while his friends race to stop the rumbling".

And given that season four has officially been designated as the "Final Season", all signs point to a conclusion. Officially, at least.

Unofficially, fans familiar with the source material suspect that there may be more story left to tell after episode 87. And that's because there actually is a lot more story to tell.

The penultimate episode was based on the manga's 129th chapter, but the manga as a whole ends with 139 chapters. Given that each episode has roughly covered between 1-2 chapters of the manga, it seems very unlikely that the finale will be able to cover so much ground with just one more episode.

There is a risk that Attack on Titan could end up skipping huge chunks of the source material, or worse, condense it all into one horrifically dull slideshow. If you powered through and endured The Promised Neverland finale, you know exactly what we're talking about.

Anime fans who would rather be eaten by a titan than go through that again are in luck though. During an interview with Newtype magazine, translated into English by Anime News Network, the Attack on Titan producers assured fans that Hajime Isayama's story will receive the ending it deserves.

And during said interview, Kensuke Tateishi, Toshihiro Maeda and Tetsuya Kinoshita confirmed plans to adapt the manga all the way up to the end, rather than cut the story short.

So what's going on? Why end Attack on Titan now? Well, the overriding consensus among fans is that episode 87 won't be the final episode after all. But that doesn't mean this isn't the final season either. Just because Part Two is coming to an end doesn't mean that a Part Three isn't waiting in the wings. Or, if not an extra run for season four, then a full-blown movie could also wrap things up.

A new Attack on Titan movie does seem likely, particularly these days when other anime shows like Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen have, well, slayed in cinemas worldwide. We're talking record-breaking figures here, particularly in Japan, so just imagine how successful an Attack on Titan film could be – especially if it does turn out to be the final chapter.

It's a sneaky move, because technically, adding a film or an extra part to season four would mean that no one was actually lying. Season four really will be the final season, still. There's just more of it than we were led to believe.

Or maybe, just maybe, episode 87 really does mark the end of this franchise. Whether it will meet all of our giant, towering expectations remains to be seen. But no matter what happens, just know that Eren would be proud of all this scheming, whether it's coming from the creators or just fans like us as we formulate our own grand plans for the franchise.

Attack On Titan is available to watch on Crunchyroll and Funimation.
