SALINAS – Coming off a year still adjusting from the pandemic, the 2022 California Rodeo Salinas is set to see crowds and competition come back in full swing as the hub of western stock performances gets underway this week.

Returning for its 112th celebration, the 2022 affair is a callback to pre-pandemic rodeos, organizers say, with ticket sales trending upward and a complete calendar of attractions not offered to attendees since 2019.

“So far, this year is going really well,” said Mandy Linquist, marketing manager for California Rodeo Salinas. “It is the first time (in three years) that we have all of our events back … and we’re expecting really large crowds.”

Though last year’s event still attracted thousands to the Salinas Sports Complex, Linquist said organizers are expecting anywhere from 5,000-15,000 more visitors to descend on the venue this time around.

Events rebounding after a COVID-19 hiatus include a usual kickoff concert, which took place over the weekend and featured the Mexican musical group Banda MS de Sergio Lizárraga; the Rodeo Carnival, open from 3-11 p.m. every day through Sunday at 295 Sun Way; and the Cowboy Shoot Out Golf Tournament, set to begin Wednesday morning at The Club at Crazy Horse Ranch in Salinas.

Meanwhile, action is bound to start Wednesday night with an evening of bull riding. Presented as part of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Xtreme Bulls Tour for the first time in rodeo history, the event will showcase top qualifying bull riders and bulls from across the country.

Some names to look out for Wednesday, and in bull riding events throughout the week, include Stetson Wright, who won his third consecutive PRCA All-Around World Championship last year, and Josh Frost, now ranked No. 2 in PRCA world standings for bull riding.

Performances for the California Rodeo Salinas will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, followed by a 6 p.m. performance Friday. Shows will continue through the weekend, with a 1:15 p.m. performance slated for both Saturday and Sunday.

Between the four days of competition, 620 contestants are signed up to perform, Linquist said, adding that over $600,000 will be awarded in this year’s rodeo.

Rodeo favorites back for 2022 include bareback riding, steer wrestling and breakaway roping.

Performances will also feature chuckwagon races, a special act that made its rodeo debut in 2019. During each race, three- to four-horse-drawn wagons will circle the arena for what the rodeo calls “dirt slingin’ excitement.”

Other rodeo events include team roping, stick horse races, freestyle bullfights, industrial calf dressing, mutton busting (kids riding sheep), Western actor performances, horse shows and the Miss California Rodeo competition. Downtown Salinas will also host horse parades at 11:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Citing heightened enthusiasm for this year’s rodeo, Linquist is encouraging guests to arrive at gates well before performance times.

Visitors will also have to abide by a clear bag policy, limiting fans to one clear bag per person and one small clutch for personal items. No bags will be checked upon entrance.

Tickets can be purchased in-person at the Salinas Sports Complex ticket office, located at 1034 N. Main Street, through Sunday. Tickets are also available online at www.carodeo.com.
