ATTENTION: Under California regulations, it is illegal to install a catalytic converter based solely on physical shape, size, configuration or pipe diameter.

Can you put a used catalytic converter on a car in California?

The requirements also sunset provisions allowing the sale of certified used catalytic converters beginning July 10, 2008. This means that no used converter can be legally advertised for sale, sold, or installed in California after this date.

What happens if you get caught without a catalytic converter in California?

If you are pulled over and caught driving without a catalytic converter you'll have to pay a $250 fine—not to mention, you'll fail emissions testing which could lead to additional penalties!

Can I use a non CARB compliant catalytic converter in California?

If the repair is being made in the state of California or in the state of Colorado (Colorado beginning January 1, 2021), you must use a CARB-compliant aftermarket catalytic converter for all repairs. This is true even if the vehicle was not certified as legal for sale in the state of California.
