How to turn off nintendo switch online automatic renewal

Posted on April 13, 2022 by (@NE_Brian) in News, Switch

After an investigation into auto-renewal practices by the Competition and Markets Authority, Nintendo has made a change to Nintendo Switch Online. Going forward, the service will no longer be sold with automatic renewal set as the default option. Users will now need to turn it on manually after signing up.

Michael Grenfell, executive director of enforcement at the CMA, said in a statement:

“As a result of our investigations, a number of changes have been made across this sector to protect customers and help tackle concerns about auto-renewing subscriptions. Today’s announcement therefore concludes our investigations into the online video gaming sector. Companies in other sectors which offer subscriptions that auto-renew should review their practices to ensure they comply with consumer protection law.”

Competition and Markets Authority has been looking into subscription practices for all three major gaming platform holders. Earlier this year, Microsoft decided to provide new terms that clearly display information on a membership to Xbox Game Pass. This includes pricing, how to cancel, and how to get a refund.

Sony has made a change on its end as well. PlayStation Play subscribers will now be contacted and reminded about how to cancel their subscription if they haven’t used the service for a while. Furthermore, Sony will end payments if users don’t cancel but aren’t actively using it.

Currently, automatic-renewal is shut off. I've been looking through the eShop page but I can't seen to find an option to turn it back on. Where is it hidden?

Open the eShop and go to your profile page. I can't remember the exact steps but it should be obvious from there.

Howdy fellow kids!

Does any of you know how a young chap like me could buy many wonderful Nintendo videogames such as Pokemon Sword (tm) and Super Mario Odyssey (tm)?
I sure wish I could give all my money to Nintendo, lol haha omg

Everyone: The button is literally not there. The eShop only has instructions on how to *disable* auto-renewal, there's no button that seems to let me re-enable it. Also, try actually reading the google link you gave me, the page doesn't explicitly say anything about re-enabling it.

Sadly, I'm thinking they don't have the turn on auto-renewal button. That means you'll have to buy it again when it is time to renew. The only thing I'm not sure about is if you bought now would it add to the end of your current NSO or will it just add the time from when you buy it, causing you to lose the time you had left.

My subscription was through the Twitch Prime promotion, and when I got the initial three months I immediately turned automatic renewal off. When I renewed for the remaining nine months, it turned the automatic renewal back on. So, all I can suggest is manually renewing your subscription and it may turn your automatic renewal back on.

Other than that, it cannot be turned back on.
