Is a 28 inch suitcase 62 linear inches

I’ve read reviews that suggest not buying a larger 62” bag. The reason - even though it will meetairline standards for a checked bag it is so large that you’ll meet the 50 pound maximum weight well before filling it (so things will slide around inside). I’m not a frequent flyer so I don’t know if this is true. If you agree that 62” is overkill, what would you suggest as the sweet spot size-wise?

Mostairlines have both weight and measurement restrictions on checked bags, and 62 linear inches for the overall measurement limit of a checked bag sounds familiar to me (just as 45 linear inches is limit on carryon).

I don't know what sweetspot is as nowadays I just try to travel with as little as possible and normally take a 22" wheelie, which I check and whose overall dimensions are 45 - 48 in,. and a carryon duffle bag. I have a larger, 24" wheelie, but I rarely travel with it these days as I find it difficult to handle getting on and off trains in Europe & other places, but that is the largest I would take if I were inclined to take a larger bag.

My 22" wheelie weighs about 35 pounds fully loaded. I don't recall weight of the 24" one; probably at least 40-45 lbs.

I see lots of tourists in NYC with much larger bags -- like 26-28 wheelies and have no idea how they manage or how they meet weight limits. These people seem to be often from UK and Ireland, so assume they are subject to similar limitations.

"what would you suggest as the sweet spot size-wise?"

Luggage is very personal.

Best is you go to a shop, look at the options and then think if that piece of luggage suits your needs, matchesairline limitations and is ok with you in various situation you may find yourself in.

Obviously a weight limit of 50 pound in a piece concept has an impact on how much you can pack into a suitcase. But then there are items which can take a lot of space but are not very heavy and vice versa.

And to all those telling to travel light. I travel a lot. But the reasons vary. There are shorter and longer trips. Trips to places I will very need to take little with me and travels where - due to circumstances - I have to have more clothes and stuff with me.

And finally, at least in my case, small does not equal light. If I travel with larger packs of documents with me, they do not take a lot of space but can be heavy. And yes, I do use electronic documents, but there are situations where one needs the originals.

We travel long haul (9+ hrs inflight) more frequently than short haul. There are weather/climate considerations. And I do prefer "smart" dress.

Our checked bags are 22" and 24" (wheels & handles inclusive) respectively. We own a 26" wheelie bag, which we use when transporting larger gift items for family.

To be honest, some days I can hardly lift the 22" bag when fully loaded. Even though it fits into the overhead compartment, I can't lift it myself, so the bag must be checked. Loaded weight is usually ~12 kg/25 lbs.

The 24" bag is a bit tricky for getting onto smaller European regional trains, especially if you like to keep the bag within sight. But for long-distance premium travel, with a baggagecar… I guess I could consider taking the 26" bag.

For cruising… prefer smaller bags + additional (compressible) totes.

I see people at luggage stores with those enormous suitcases and I wonder just how much weight they are taking with them? How will they manage getting them on trains etc? I can just picture them on the New York subway stairs trying to get to the airport ... just silly.

That’s a 158cm bag and meets mostairlines requirements. It isn’t that big. My big one is around 200cm and that one when packed to meet 23kg has stuff sliding around.

My 158cm one was stuffed full at the weekend to the point I had to lean on it to close it and it was 20.5 kg. It is a lightweight case though. If you uy a heavy. Add and put a lot of heavy stuff in it like shoes and bottles, then it’s possible that a small amount of clothes will shift around. Another factor is the position of the restraining straps for clothes. If they are elastic or adjustable and anchored to the bottom of the case, even half full, stuff doesn’t move around. I have one where they are positioned at the top and they’re useless unless packed full.

Packing cubes are another option to keep stuff from sliding to the bottom of the base when the case is upright

"How will they manage getting them on trains etc?" => That is where your logic fails you. They don't!

Because the person selecting and loading the luggage is not always the person having the task of lifting them.

Take me. My wife buys a new piece of luggage. Loads it to the maximum allowed by my preferredairline (and that limit is insanely high) AND it is me who then can push it around, lift it and manipulate it.

And of course, not only the luggage of my beloved wife, everybodies!

I am the the family donkey.

My little 22 in wheelie can feel quite heavy at 35 pds. A man who offered to lift it on or off an airport bus not long ago was shocked by how heavy it was. I weighed it when I got home and the empty suitcase itself weighs 8-9 pounds. It's a very nice case but I decided I wanted something lighter. So have bought a second, lightweight duffle and have a simple luggage trolley and hope to just take those soon. Will check one duffle and carry on the other with a backpack.

SEveral years ago I had a couple of experiences where I had trouble getting my suitcase down the narrow stairs of English trains (though one was a regional train I think the other was the first class section of a Great Western train), and was so concerned I wouldn't be able to get off before the train pulled out that I just took the suitcases and threw them off the train (luckily nobody was in their path).

After that I just thought I had to do something about what I was carrying around.

'You pack it you rack it'

Love that. But then for the sake of peace and love, I better do not utter these words, but rather: "Yes my Dear".

On the other side, I admit, the sentence my wife likely would not like to hear that frequently is: "What's for dinner? I'm hungry."

What size suitcase is 62 linear inches?

Usually, medium checked suitcases are 58-61 linear inches in size, which is just below the 62 linear inch size limit, so when you're looking for a checked suitcase, get one in this size.

What are the dimensions of a 28 inch suitcase?

28” Case - Height 28" (70cm) x Width 18" (45cm) x Depth 10" (25cm) approx.

What does a 62 bag linear mean for flying?

Most domestic airlines publish checked baggage size limits as a single dimension: 62 linear inches total. International airlines vary slightly, but the 62-inch rule is the most common standard worldwide. Bags larger than 62 linear inches can still fly, but they may be subject to additional fees.

How do I know if my suitcase is 62 linear inches?

Checked luggage is measured in linear inches, which means the total sum of height, width, and depth. It usually needs to be below 62 linear inches (157 cm). So for example, if you measured that your luggage was 28 x 20 x 12 inches, then it would be 60 linear inches in total (28 + 20 + 12 = 60).
