Toyota Camry Engine Oil Change Guide
Owners of other Toyota, Scion and Lexus vehicles such as the Avalon, Corolla, Prius, Yaris, Mirai, 86, Sienna, RAV4, Highlander, 4Runner, C-HR, Land Cruiser, Sequoia, Tacoma, Tundra, Venza, Hilux, RX 350, IS 250, IS 350, CT 200H, GS 450h, GX 470, LX 470, UX 200, NX 300 and UX 250h may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The original OEM oil filter on this 2018 Camry was part number Toyota 90915-10009. A few other compatible replacement oil filters with their part numbers are as follows: Fram XG4967, EcoGard X4476 and Premium Guard PG4476EX. The A25A-FKS 2.5L I4 engine requires 4.8 U.S. quarts (or 4.5L) of synthetic SAE 0W-16 oil. The tools needed to complete this procedure include a floor jack, two jack stands, a 10mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet, a 14mm socket and a 3/8" drive ratchet, a used oil catch container and an automotive funnel. Under Engine Cover Loosen Counterclockwise Remove Screws The first steps are to warm up the engine for a few minutes, drive the vehicle on to a level surface, place the transmission in park and turn off the ignition. Warming up the engine for a few minutes will help suspend any contaminants within the old oil and also allow the old oil to drain out more quickly. Engage the emergency / parking brake and place wheel chocks on both sides of the rear tires to help prevent the car from moving. Then open the hood, twist off the oil filler cap in the counterclockwise direction and pull out the oil dipstick an inch or two. Removing the oil filler cap and partially removing the dipstick will help prevent a vacuum from forming and also allow the old oil to drain out more quickly. I found it necessary to raise the front of the car to access the drain bolt and oil filter. You might be able to squeeze under the car without raising it. Raise the front of the vehicle with a floor jack and securely support it with at least two jack stands. 3rd Screw 4th Screw Four Screws Removed Slide under the engine bay with the 10mm socket and a 1/4" drive ratchet. Locate the oil service access panel in the under engine cover or "skid plate". Remove the four black metal screws on the service access panel by turning them in the counterclockwise direction with the 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet. Set the four screws aside in a safe place. Note - Another Camry owner wrote me an email to suggest that it is only necessary to remove three of the screws on the access panel. Then slightly loosen the fourth screw and swing the panel out of the way. Later on, you can just rotate the panel back into place and replace the three screws. (Thank you for the tip!) Remove Access Cover Black Metal Oil Pan Silver Oil Drain Bolt Slide the access panel out of the under engine cover and set it aside in a safe place. Once the service panel is out of the way, you'll be able to see the black metal oil pan and the oil filter. The silver metal oil drain bolt is situated at the rear of the oil pan. The oil filter is situated on the passenger side of the engine bay just above the black metal oil pan. Oil Filter Location Used Oil Catch Basin Loosen Counterclockwise Slide the used oil catch container to just below the oil drain plug. Loosen the oil drain bolt by turning it in the counterclockwise direction with the 14mm socket and a 3/8" drive ratchet. Be careful when you remove the oil drain bolt. The old oil might still be hot enough to burn your fingers. Draining Out Old Oil Drain Bolt Washers Replace Oil Drain Plug Allow the old oil to drain out for at least a few minutes or until the flow slows down to just an occasional drip. Inspect the metal washer or "gasket" on the oil drain bolt. If necessary, replace the washer. The oil drain bolt washer part number is Toyota 90430-12031. Spin in the oil drain bolt a few turns by hand in the clockwise direction to prevent it from becoming cross threaded. Tighten the oil drain bolt in the clockwise direction with the 14mm socket and a 3/8" drive ratchet to just past hand tight. If you have a torque wrench, the service manual specification for tightening the oil drain bolt on the A25A-FKS 2.5L I4 engine is 30 lb-ft (or 40 N*m). (The oil drain bolt torque specification for the 3.5L V6 2GR-FKS engine is 27 lb-ft.) Slide Basin Under Filter Lisle Oil Filter Wrench Loosen Counterclockwise Slide the used oil catch container to just below the old oil filter. If you have trouble loosening the old oil filter, I highly recommend the Lisle 63600 oil filter wrench. Twist off the old oil filter in the counterclockwise direction. Allow the old oil to drain out from the filter and the filter receptacle for at least a minute or two. Discard the old oil filter. Make sure that the rubber o-ring from the old filter is not still attached to the engine. Dip Finger In New Oil Lubricate Rubber O-Ring Twist On New Oil Filter Dip your finger into some new oil and lubricate the rubber o-ring gasket on the new oil filter. Lubricating the o-ring on the new filter will allow it form a better seal and also make it easier to remove during the next oil change. I recommend buying the Fram XG4967oil filter since it has excellent reviews on Amazon. Twist on the new oil filter in the clockwise direction to about 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn past finger tight. Avoid over tightening the new oil filter to prevent from damaging the rubber o-ring which could lead to an oil leak. Double check that the oil drain bolt and the new oil filter are tight before moving on to the next steps. Line Up Oil Service Cover Re-Insert Tab At Rear Spin In Clockwise Line up the oil service access panel with the opening in the under engine cover. Re-insert the tab at the rear edge of the service panel into place first. Spin in the screws a turn or two by hand in the clockwise direction to hold the panel in place. Tighten Screws Clockwise Four Screws Secured Service Cover Replaced Tighten the four screws in the clockwise direction with the 10mm socket and a 1/4" drive ratchet until they are snug. Lower Car From Stands Insert Automotive Funnel Engine Oil SAE 0W-16 If you raised the vehicle, carefully lower it from the jack stands by using the floor jack. Insert an automotive funnel into the oil filler hole. The oil capacity specification for the A25A-FKS engine is 4.8 U.S. quarts (4.5L or 4.0 Imperial quarts) of SAE 0W-16 synthetic oil. Pour In New Oil Replace Oil Filler Cap Push In Dipstick It is far better to have slightly less oil than necessary in an engine than to over fill it. I recommend only pouring in about 4 to 4.25 U.S. quarts of new oil into the engine at first. Then replace the oil filler cap by twisting it on in the clockwise direction and push the oil dipstick down into place. Start the engine and allow it to warm up for at least a few minutes. Turn off the engine and allow the new oil to drain down to the oil pan for at least five to ten minutes. Check Oil Level Replace Dipstick Oil Change Complete To check the oil level, pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean with a paper towel, fully re-insert it and then pull it out again. If necessary, slowly pour in more oil and repeatedly check the level on the dipstick until it reaches just at or below the upper metal hole in the tip of the dipstick which indicates the "MAX " or "FULL" line. You may not need to pour in the entire 4.8 U.S. quarts of new oil in order for the level on the dipstick to reach the full line depending on how long you allowed the old oil to drain out. To reset the "MAINT REQD" (maintenance required) oil life meter, follow these steps: 1. Select "Vehicle Settings" on the multi-information display LCD screen and press "OK". 2. Select "Scheduled Maintenance" and press "OK". 3. Select "Yes" and press "OK". A message will appear on the screen when the reset procedure is complete. It would be a good idea to check your parking spot, driveway or garage for spots of fresh oil during the next few days to ensure that the drain bolt and oil filter were properly installed. Be sure to record the oil change in your vehicle's service records. For more, check out all of my
