Event Information

The Recycling & Waste Reduction District of Porter County will host the fifth household hazardous waste collection event on Saturday, August 14, 2021 at Portage High School located at 6450 US Highway 6 in Portage. The event will take place from 9 am to 2 pm CST.

The event will feature a free gas can exchange. Porter County residents can exchange old gas cans for eco-friendly 2.5 gallon gas cans. Supplies are limited. Gas cans will be distributed on a first come first serve basis.

Porter County residents can dispose of clean and dry plastic bags, plastic film wraps, grocery bags and plastic wrapping. Water softener bags will not be accepted for recycling.

Beyond plastic bags residents can dispose products containing: corrosive, toxic, ignitable or reactive substances. Common household hazardous waste items include anti-freeze, motor oil, batteries (household & automotive), fluorescent bulbs, medical sharps, oil based paints, deck stains, pool chemicals, pesticides, and household smoke detectors.

Items NOT accepted at this event include electronics, latex paint, tires, grill propane cylinders, and large containers over 55 gallons in size. Visit www.PorterCountyRecycling.org for a complete list of accepted items.

For those unable to participate on August 14, 2021 the sixth and final household hazardous waste collection event for the year is scheduled for Saturday, October 9, 2021 at Porter County Expo, located at 215 E. Division, Valparaiso, IN. The event will take place from 9 am to 2 pm CST.

Event Information

Porter County Household Hazardous Waste Collection on October 10th from 9am to 2pm CDT at the Porter County Expo Center and Fairgrounds.

The Recycling and Waste Reduction District of Porter County is hosting Household Hazardous Waste Collection on Saturday, October 10th from 9am to 2pm CDT at the Porter County Expo Center and Fairgrounds located at 215 E Division Rd, Valparaiso, IN 46383. The District will also be collecting used tires during this event. 

Household Hazardous Waste or “HHW” are unwanted products that contain corrosive, toxic, ignitable or reactive ingredients that require special care upon disposal. The District sponsors collection days throughout the year that allow Porter County residents to safely dispose of these materials.

Acceptable materials include household cleaners, pesticides, kerosene, gasoline, oil-based paints, antifreeze, solvents and much more. *Please Note: Electronics and Latex paint will NOT be accepted at this event* A longer list of accepted items can be found at www.portercountyrecycling.org.

Typically tires are collected in early spring, but due to Covid-19, tire collection will take place at the October 10th Household Hazardous Waste event.

Residents may bring up to 4 tires under 20 inches for free (after the first 4 there is a charge of $3 per tire under 20 inches). Tires measuring 20 to 25 inches will cost $5 each. Tires over 25 inches are $15 each.

Here’s an item Region residents may not realize should be taken to a a household hazardous waste collection – old nail polish. The Recycling and Waste Reduction District of Porter County says nail polish is extremely flammable and classified as household hazardous waste. Porter County residents are encouraged to participate in the next collection event happening Saturday June 11 at Portage High School. Porter County residents can also recycle clean and dry plastic bags and variety of household hazardous waste items such as pool chemicals, non-narcotic medications, medical sharps and more.
