     Ever since my childhood I have planned to follow in the footsteps of my parents, who devoted their lives to public health by running a long-term care institution. Having earned my bachelor’s degree in public health, I now plan to study management overseas, as I recognize the importance of good management in maximizing the services we offer and ensuring the continued success of this clinic. In the university, I learned about the European origins of social welfare, and how many of these laws and regulations have been exported and adapted around the world. This is what attracts me to Europe, as I am eager to learn from the examples set by European countries, and especially the UK. I am also looking forward to the chance to step out of my comfort zone and obtain a more cutting-edge and advanced education in management than I could receive in my native country, as this will give me a significant edge when returning home and resuming my career in public health and management.

I chose to study public health in the university because the public health curriculum was applicable to a wide range of areas, including the health care industry, public works and even public policy. Moreover, I was attracted to the public health department because of its focus on disease prevention as opposed to treatment and rehabilitation. The main courses focused on health administration and policy, and I had the chance to learn how theories can be applied in the areas of primary secondary, and tertiary prevention. At the same time, I took several courses on biostatistics, from which I used the scientific method to analyze and reach conclusions. Moreover, I also took a number of courses in management, policy, and administration, where I conducted several practical group projects that relate directly to my proposed master’s studies.

Outside of class, I completed my internship in a hospital’s planning department, where I helped plan various community activities. Indeed, a large portion of my education has come off campus. For instance, I attended several academic and industry conferences on long-term care institutions, where I talked with experts from academia and industry. I also worked at my parents’ long-term care institution, helping with elder care and assisting with accounting and policies. This institution has a nursing home, elder apartments, and respiratory care rooms, each of which requires different approaches to management. This is essentially why I have decided to specialize in management for my master’s degree, as I hope to learn new and useful approaches that I can one day apply to my family’s institution, developing services that will benefit both operators and consumers.

After completing your master’s program, I hope to begin working in the planning department of a large institute, such as a hospital or other enterprise. I hope to contribute to the strategy formulation, product planning, and promotion, as this would be an ideal way to accumulate experience and hone my organizational and logical skills. I am interested in the work of a planner, as this relates to the work I expect to do at my family’s clinic in the future. Therefore, after getting sufficient experience, I will return to my family’s clinic, integrating our internal resources such as the community care, institutional care, and medical care. I believe that, with my assistance, we can share human resources and reduce costs, becoming much more efficient and productive in the process. If I am to accomplish these goals, however, I know that I must acquire much more advanced knowledge of management, which is why I sincerely hope to have the chance to join your master’s program in the near future.

Statement of Intent for Health Leadership and Management

I am using this opportunity to indicate my interest in the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science with a focus on Health Leadership and Management at the prestigious University of Canterbury. Firstly, I will like to introduce myself as a hardworking and compassionate healthcare facilitator with over 5 years of experience in the Indian healthcare system. My interest in healthcare stems from my early exposure to the health implications faced by the Indian populace; and ever since I have found every working opportunity to improve the quality of healthcare available to the vulnerable population around me rewarding and liberating.

With my undergraduate degree which majored in Psychology, Criminology and Sociology, I was able to inform my decision regarding my interest in healthcare. Hence, I decided to improve on the foundation I have already gained through an advanced MBA in Hospital Administration. My MBA study in Hospital Administration helped me expand my scope in hospital planning and designing, hospital support and utility services, hospital operations management, medical ethics and law, and medical safety and risk management. Ever since then, I have utilized that qualification to work in different health management roles which have given me a thorough understanding of the issues faced in India’s healthcare system.

In the last two and half years, I have been committed to studying the range of problems that health professionals are facing to identify innovative ways to solve them. My study has shown how a lot of these challenges are tied to leadership and policy management within the health system. Since then, my interest in healthcare policies, leadership, and management has piqued. I aspire for this degree as a way to understand how to tackle the challenges that health organizations face that are related to leadership and management. As a healthcare facilitator, I understand how the actions of policymakers impact the systems that we work in. Obtaining this degree will firstly put me in a good place to handle leadership positions within healthcare organizations, it will also prepare me to take a higher leadership responsibility that involves policy-making and management and promote a system that promotes health equity, efficiency and quality.

My decision to study in New Zealand is because it has a lot of promises for international students. With an excellent education system that supports international students. Secondly, the qualifications from New Zealand are internationally recognized and add credibility to its holders, and when added to the research opportunities, I believe studying in New Zealand is the best match for my academic pursuit. I am confident that I will excel in this program because of my academic and work experiences. I also have research experiences that will be instrumental to my success during my thesis.

Upon completion of this program, I foresee a promotion in my current organization, also more opportunities are coming up for healthcare managers in the Middle East countries, and with this qualification, I will stand a better chance to compete for those lucrative opportunities. In the future, I look forward to pursuing a career as a researcher in healthcare policy and healthcare service management.

2. The admission committee: The admission committee of any school wants to know your story, your passion, and your motivation for picking this course. They also want to know why you think you’re a good fit for their school or why you decided to study in their school. And if you’re a foreigner, they want to know why you want to study in their country.
3. You: Tell your story; write your statement because it is yours. Know what you want to say, and say it in a way that shows how your academic and career experience has brought you to where you are now. Don’t just stuff in sentences, make your statements purposeful and driven towards the goal that; you’re ready for this program, you understand what it will take, and you’ll be a good addition to their next intake. Tell your story.

Part 3:

How to avoid rejection

1. Tell your story, and personalize your statements.
2. Follow the standard outline or the school’s given personal statement outline.
3. Write good sentences and paragraphs.
4. Proofread, use Grammarly, use people. Proofread not only for spelling and grammar, proofread for story, consistency, and believability. Let your story add up.
