The classic casserole dish was created in 1955 by Dorcas Reilly, the Campbell’s Soup Company Test Kitchen manager. That means it’s been around for close to 70 years. We think the French’s recipe is the easiest and most true to what people remember from their childhood.

Unlike most people, I didn’t grow up with this recipe. I don’t know why, but we just didn’t have it at our holiday meals. It wasn’t until I was an adult that I started making it and now I always include it for special meals and our Thanksgiving table.

  • Green beans – keep it simple and use froze, cut green beans
  • condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • milk
  • salt and pepper
  • French fried onions
  • soy sauce (optional)

How To Make Green Bean Casserole?

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Spray an 8x8x2 (2 quart baking dish) baking dish with cooking spray and set aside.
  • Cook green beans as per the directions on the package. Drain excess water.
  • In medium sized mixing bowl, combine cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce (optional), and salt and pepper. Whisk until smooth.
  • Add green beans to the soup mixture and coat the beans. Pour green bean mixture into prepared baking dish.
  • Top with french fried onions.
  • Bake, uncovered, 30-40 minutes or until warmed through and the top is golden brown.

We love to use frozen green beans because it makes it really easy, but you can start with fresh green beans and wash and cut them. The result will be the same.

Can you Make The Casserole Ahead of Time?

You can make green bean casserole ahead of time. We recommend you mix the green beans and mushroom soup, then add the french onions just before baking.

Can You Use Canned Green Beans?

You can substitute canned green beans for fresh or frozen, just be sure to drain the beans before putting them in the mixture. You want all the excess moisture off the beans.

If you aren’t a mushroom fan, you can substitute the cream of mushroom soup for cream of chicken soup and get a similar flavor. Other options are cream of celery or cream of potato.

We don’t recommend freezing a soup-based dish like this because the canned soup will most likely separate upon thawing. It’s best to be eaten fresh, or refrigerate leftovers for a couple of days and reheat before eating.

Is there a substitute for French Fried Onions in green bean casserole?

If you don't have French Fried Onions you can substitute (for a topping): Dried bread crumbs mixed with butter work well for a vegetable or casserole topping. OR - Use crushed potato chips. OR - Crushed Ritz© crackers add a nice buttery flavor.
