What oil does audi a5 take

I’m changing the oil in my 2013 Audi A5 but want to use the best oil. What type of oil should I use for my 2013 Audi A5?

Answer provided by

With so many oil types available it can be hard to know which one to purchase. The 2013 Audi A5 oil type is a synthetic oil that is compatible with European vehicles. Here are our favorite synthetic oil picks for the 2013 Audi A5:

  • Castrol EDGE 5W40 Full Synthetic
  • Mobil 1 FS European Car Formula
  • Pennzoil Platinum Euro Full Synthetic

Just like engine oil, there are a lot of car insurance types available on the market today. Luckily, the insurance comparison app Jerry is here to help.

I guess that's the difference between european model and North American model. I believe N. American model preffer to use 5W40 but use 5W30 if you can't get the 5W40.

5w40 is the viscosity recommended by audi here in the states.

i just put a quart of castrol edge 5w40 in my car yesterday. sometimes i do use mobil 5w30 because 5w40 is not easy to find at gas stations. either grade works but 5w40 is ideal.

I'm still covered under Audi's care plan every 10k miles. I thought Audi America uses Mobil 1? Personally I change my oil at 5000 miles instead of every 10,000 like the dealer. For the in-between changes i prefer to use Total oil (formally known as Elf) 5w40.

Edit: I also put a magnetic oil drain plug I got from ECS tuning.

I use Mobil 1 0w40 European Formula at my similar 5k in-between-AudiCare changes and also have the ECS magnetic plug.

Not sure why you'd question his use of oil that is specifically recommended in the owner's manual...

here were advised to use 30w,we're as across the pond its 40w.
so both types are in theory correct.
Same as Audi did use mobile before changing to castrol.
this issue will just keep reappearing when more people join the forum
Be easier if our cars didn't burn so much oil!!!

My car in on Long Life Service and my Audi Dealership uses some Shell stuff. The "free" litre of oil is Shell also. The engine bay says Castrol though, and I tend to top it up with Castrol Edge.

^ Yep, the 2.0T oil cap in the US is branded with "Castrol" as well, but I still prefer Mobil 1 0w40.

Two questions:
1. The local workshop I went to today used Mobil 1 5W-50 instead of 5W-30.. My car is imported from the UK and I notice from this forum that all UK cars use 5W-30. The technician told me that 5W-50 is more suitable for the hot and humid tropical climate. Is this true? Would it affect the performance of the car?
2. The engine oil lever indicator on MMI shows 'no information on oil level is available' or something to that effect. This only happened after the engine oil change today. Is this normal?

Thanks guys..

^ Your mechanic is correct in that you typically need a 'thicker' oil for hot climates. Mobil 1 0w-40, which is a multi-weight/viscosity, is plenty for most locales however [see owner's manual for proper viscosity for your area].

You need your engine to be hot from use and having sat off for a couple minutes (to allow oil to return to the pan) for the MMI oil level indicator to work [again, see owner's manual].

If i look at my owners manuel for Canada this is what they say use 5w40 and if they don,t have it well you always can use 5w30 or 0w40 .

I also use Castrol the same as the OP .

So i guess Audi North America is wrong and your right ....

Audi UK (and incidentally Audi Germany) recommend Castrol Edge 5W30 (and as S4 says, they have their own re-branded version of the same product).

Interestingly enough, "Edge" and "Professional Powerflow" are the same product - I cornered a Castrol chemical engineer with a few questions a while back and he admitted this. The Longlife III variants are the same anyway.

According to Audi they recommend use of oil that meets their quality standard VW 502 00 (see Audi of America > Owners > Audi Service > Top Tier Fuel and Oil Requirements for details). I have attached a copy of the Audi TSB that provides the list of approved oils for North America. There are lots of choices available. And regarding specifically Mobil 1 - note that the recommended viscosity is 0W-40, not 5W-40. I believe this is because Mobil 1 is not available in the US in 5W-40 except for a formulation intended for use in diesel engines. I'm really not sure what the difference is between oil used in diesels versus gasoline engines, but nevertheless 0W-40 is the recommended viscosity for the A5/S5 gasoline engines in the US.
