This movie isn't terrible, but it comes across as a film student's first film given the awkward pacing and underdeveloped plot. The characters are so underdeveloped, you don't really care what happens to them. The use of a third party narrator harkens back to the Virgin Suicides, but clearly misses the reason why a narrator was used for that film, and offers nothing but frustration here... This movie also seems confused as to what it wants to be--using elements from Goodfellas, the Perfect Storm and the Departed in an otherwise coming of age film. The soundtrack is good, but it hardly fits the time period and actually detracts from the 90s nostalgia. Having grown up in the Northeast in the 90s, I didn't find its music or fashion to reflect the world in which I lived at that time... including the culture of Cape Cod at that time. While it looks good not the surface, this film is awkward and underwhelming.

This movie was both written and directed by the same guy, Elijah Bynum, and from what I've read, based off of his own high school experience growing up. The most beautiful parts of this film, which I wanted to go back and watch again, were the punchy, almost satirized situations of teenage boys and teenage girls trying to woo each other-- sometimes laughably inducing second-hand embarrassment, and sometimes pulling it off so smoothly you get swept off your feet right up with the characters. There are also a few very quiet and intimate scenes between characters, romantic or partners in crime, where nothing much is happening as far as action goes, but the sparse dialogue, cinematography and superb and captivating acting from the young cast really draws you in and holds you in this world. That is what I loved in this film, and what I wish the plot catered more towards. By the end of the film, I still didn't care about the elaborate drug dealing and money-- I wished this movie was about ridiculous young love in your hometown. I wanted to see more human moments happening between these very human characters. That's what this movie felt like it was aching to be, unfortunately the plot didn't allow it to fully flesh out. Still though, it's a wonderful watch just for the beautiful, juicy, dreamy scenes of summer romance, even if they're tucked inside of a cheesy drugs-gone-bad half thriller. I'm excited to see what this director comes up with next-- this was a good place to start. And of course: We Love Timothee Chalamet.

I liked that the narrator was not part of the story; it gives an interesting P.O.V. It's like you're being told about this combustive summer by someone from town, while being given details as an aside. Of course the narrator is not going to know what became of Daniel and McKayla; he didn't know them!
They did a decent job getting to that early 90's vibe, it was like going back to high school. ;)
There have been some comments about no character development, and I'd have to say that I disagree. All of these characters were changed in some way over the 3 month period in good and bad ways, but, just like in the real world, the overall effect will take time. This isn't the typical tied up in a bow, this is how it's laid out and how you should feel about it kind of movie.
Once again, I was greatly impressed by Timothée Chalamet. That young man has serious chops. He already has a captivating emotional range and I look forward to watching his career unfold.

I don't normally write movie reviews, but I must make an exception. I feel obligated cause this movie only has 3 & a half stars. This is the best modern movie I've seen. I feel most movies released in the past decade lack depth. Actors today are too cool, too perfect in their films. Elijanh Bynum did an exceptional job with every scene, incredible eye for detail. The film feels like the 90's, with modern HD camera's. The cloths, car's, houses, VHS scene role. Very era specific, It takes me back. Considering I was a young Long Island boy in the 90's. While reading some of the critics comments, it seems there was common complaint. The movie didn't have much of a plot with little character development. My responds to that is actions speak louder than words. Some things are best left unsaid. It's unique, and exciting. I had know idea what was going to happen next. What a breath of fresh air. This film hits all the human emotions perfectly.... and all at the right times. If your eyes don't water up at the end your a cold stone mother F#&k#%. Extremely symbolic. Exceptional Story, I highly recommend it.

Well, we all know that Timothee Chalemet is a brilliant actor. This film was good but not great.
So far, Chalemet's best movies are: Call Me by Your Name (My favorite movie ever) and Beautiful Boy.
He is going to have a brilliant career.
Good actors can play many parts and make you believe they are that person.
Note: The bad drug dealer is the actor who played the boy friend in the movie, Brooklyn
I love this Amazon Streaming. You can check on the actors bio while watching the film.
A side note: Notice that Timothee wears horizontal striped shirts 90% of the time. Not only in this film. Kind of a trademark. (??)
But he is a beautiful model. Every fashion designer want him in their clothes. That slim body and boyish looks does it every time.
