2005 jeep grand cherokee radio not working

I posted this on the gen'l JGC problems & maintenance forum but thought other owners might find it here first on this new radio oriented forum. From Feb 17:

I have a newer 07 GC Laredo with X package and am wondering if any out there have figured out how to keep the radio in AUX mode.

The audio system is a base single CD w/Bostons Acoustics amp adder. This REF model radio has AM/FM stereo, single-disc CD player w/bass, treble, balance, and fade control through on-screen menu -AND- front mount auxiliary audio input jack. I did not want Sirius since I have had XM for many years and own the Delphi portable XM that I dash mounted. In our 01 & 04 cars we used a cassette deck adapter to direct feed audio from the XM unit and the car audio always stays in cassette play when you turn it off/on. However this Jeep radio goes back to FM radio mode upon restarting the Jeep when you turn off the Jeep with the radio in AUX mode (the XM unit powers off/on automatically when is senses a loss of 12VDC power, 4 years old and perhaps "smarter" then the newer Jeep radio?).

Anyone with a 07 or 08 model feeding the AUX with XM or even a MP3 player ie ipod figure out how to keep this Jeep radio in AUX mode?

From Mar 14 07: I will answer my own question with what our dealer got from Jeep engineering: you must turn the radio OFF before turing off the ignition and then the radio stays in AUX mode when you start the car. But of course you have to turn the radio back on again as well.

One of the crazier answers I have ever heard. The radio does not require that operation to stay in AM,FM or CD mode as you can switch off the car with the radio on and it goes back to the mode you left it in. Seems to me a true design bug! I don't think it's worth fighting, but one of my first (minor) disappointments with this new vehicle.

My jeep 2012 grand Cherokee Am/fm stop working
all of a sudden. CD player, satellite and aux still
works but it's pause every 5 seconds by making a
popping sound.  When it pause the volume doesn't
work until the pause is over. So upset about this.

@alfa01,

I think if you pop one open you might be surprised at how easy to repair that generation of circuit boards are. Especially vehicle pcbs as they have to be "rugged".

The power caps and ICs are the likely culprits. Check the solder points underneath the pcb too (most pcbs of that era are through-hole). Look for the solder to be cracked away from the via. A crack will look like a clean ring around the entire joint.

Heres an example off the wiki: soldering

The other thing to look for is blown capacitors. The electrolytic will ooze out the bottom (the top if they're really bad) and you will see gunk around the base of the cap. The bigger they are, the more likely a suspect.

Also, take some pictures and maybe we can help to trace out the obvious circuits to help narrow things down.

Cheers

In the 21st century, repair men and ladies are gone to the way side, the labor prices make these small jobs not worth the effort, everybody is just replacing their units with new, used, aftermarket or trying simple repairs themselves as mentioned here, good luck.

You can clean with alcohol but once the CD laser lens is cleaned, wipe it again with a dry cloth as the alcohol will leave a residue, just clean it a second time with a dry cotton swab. Any adjustment for the laser strength will need the help of an oscilloscope to view the tell tale pattern at the proper strength. Dry or leaking CAPS are always a problem.

I just fixed mine. There were cold solder joints on the main board. I pulled the bottom cover off and re-soldered all the joints. Some silicone sealer had to be removed from the solder joint area in the process, but the radio now works.

Where is the IOD fuse on a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

The Ignition-Off Draw (IOD) fuse is located in the Total Integrated Power Module (TIPM), usually found near the battery in the engine compartment.

Is there a fuse for stereo?

The most likely reason for your radio's sudden death is a blown fuse. All car radios have at least one fuse that protects it from power surges coming from somewhere else in the vehicle.
